Why is the Evo so fast??

Before my Evo VI, I had an S2000. On the same dyno (but obviously different time of years etc), I got

155Kw @ the rear wheels for the S2000
160kw @ all four wheels for the Evo.

Now, I understand all that about drivetrain loss and stuff, so don't bother telling me about that - but the dyno measures at the wheels, after all the drive train losses are taken into the account. It measures the power available to be transfered into the ground. IE, your ability to move.

So... Now, why can I run a 13.9 on my S2000, but I'm expecting to run in the 12s with my Evo, when the amount of power they can put to the ground is almost identical?

The only thing I can put it down to, is that the Evo has a fatter area under the curve (IE, makes 160Kw by 5000rpm or so, when the S2000 needed to be at 9000rpm to make that kind of power)

There are several factors.. the area under the curve is one of them.. Gearing is another, the weight of the car, traction, wind resistance, ETC.. 150 hp in an evo is different than a dumptruck

ALL WHEEL DRIVE. The Evo times will be better because you wont spend any time spinning tires. You will plant and go. With your S200 will have to get a great launch just to hit those low times. And I am sure there are more explanations than that, but that is a BIG one.

Not to mention that this question is being written in the wrong thread.

Wow, thanks for the quick replies... Interestingly, there are more replies than there are reads?

So you guys think it's the extra traction that makes the difference? I suppose that accounts for a lot of it - to get 13.9, I had to dump the clutch at 5600rpm (just after VTEC) and I'd spin for a moment before launching. I still feel that the acceleration is greater in the Evo though, so maybe gear ratios.

So as far as I can tell from the replies, there's no magic formula because the power is being transfered through 4 wheels and not 2?

BTW, where better to put this thread? It's not a technical engine/drivetrain question.

Oh DOH! I thought this was the Evo section.

They created a new almost identical forum and didn't tell me! (Okay, I didn't expect them to tell me) Please move this when you can, admin.

How about the Evo discussion forum first and formost. Other reason for the slightly sluggish (I use that term loosely) times in the S2000 is the HUGE difference in torque between the 2 cars, also as you said earlier, the amount of time needed to reach peak power.

So you got a VTEC in your evo huh?

Uh, yeah, I retrofitted variable valve timing in the Evo, so I could get a combination between smooth idling and raw power up top. I put 240 x 9.0mm up till 5500rpm and 272 x 10.5mm from 5500 to redline.

Actually, if you read the earlier post, 13.9 was the S2000's time, not the Evo's time.

It still gives us an opportunity to have a good laugh though.
