evo tranny question
evo tranny question
i just joined the forums, well, ive been reading them for a while now, and decided to register and ask this question that has been bugging me for a while.
i live in the bay area and on certain freeways around here, theres alot of traffic, and alot of emptiness at night. ive been considering in getting an evo, not sure what kind.. what year, what kind of tranny, because alot of factors play in..
traffic : i would get tired shifting in back to back traffic for about 60 miles, ( my job sucks like that )
the emptiness of certain freeways : at night time, there arent that many cars on the freeway ( between 11pm - 3am ), and well.. i do like to drive hard and fast, which is the reason why i want an evo,
another question i had is, do they even make auto tranny in evo's? specifically the 04's. and if they do what would be the difference other than it being an auto, and not manual.. would there be any noticable loss in preformance? gas milage? price? and anything else that would factor in the differences between the 2.
i do know how to drive stick, but not expertly, and i would be afraid of screwing up the tranny by driving it like i do.. because im so used to automatic ( from my sisters car, since i dont have a car as of yet )
soo yeah pleeease post if you could help.. thankss

Welcome to the Forum!
Evo's are not offered with an auto tranny that I am aware of. I know the US versions do not and will not have an auto option. If you're not very comfortable shifting all the time in traffic, this might not be the right car for you.
From what you're talking about it sounds like you want a fun car that performs, but that you can also be relaxed/comfortable in. If that's the case, you should know the Evo is the opposite of that.
The short ratio steering requires your full attention at all times, it is manual, there is no cruise control, you will feel every bump and pebble on the road (some people like that), and it's not very quiet either.
There are many cars out there that might fit your bill a little nicer. Personally I like the Jettas, and A4's. There are others...
Hope that helps, I don't want to totally discourage you. I just want to give you a realistic opinion. Owning an Evo is a labor of love, with the emphasis on labor.
It IS a great car though for what it does. Hope you find what you're looking for.

hmm i wouldnt mind the noise or the bumps in the road, accually i like it and stuff but would there be any other car in the same catagorey as an EVO you could reccommend? im still contemplating on getting an EVO though, but just incase i want to change my mind what car could be in that range? im into the style of the car too, thats a major reason i just love looking at an evo and want one so bad, but i also like celica's but.. i dont know how good they are on the street.. or if theyre worse than civics =X haha no clue..
If you can afford it a used 2002 or 2001 Audi S4 with a tip (auto) trans in it would be a great car. Chip it and you have a great car. Much more refined then the Evo but you will give up a lot on the performance (steering, braking, speed) with the S4. I have a stage 1 S4 (6spd) and it is a great car, it is my second car and am replacing it with a Evo to have a car that lives closer to the edge. I think the chipped auto S4's are running high 13's, and braking is 60-0 in the 115-120 area.
S4's are sweet cars. Pure performance wise (handling acceleration) I think you'll be hard pressed to find a comparable car with an auto transmission. At least not one that's in a similar price range.
93+ Supra's are about $20k+ I'd say the average is around $30k. There are many that have the auto transmission. They are 320HP stock, and very comfy too. The aftermarket is good for these and tuners have pushed the HP to over a 1000 at the wheels. You'd be giving up some in the handling area, but these are fantastic machines.
As far as new cars go, There are M3's, S4's, and maybe the new GTO. The GTO has a sequential shifter with controls on the wheel, IIRC. I think roger is right about the WRX although I cannot remember for sure.

hey infinityfx, i live in the bay area too =P
i drive a blue by you lancer evolution =P u might see me driving along 280 and 19th ave =P
anywayz u should just get the lancer evo... and dont even worry about the manual transmission... because the lancer evolution's transmission is much much more easier to shift and use than the car that i had to practice on... lol it didnt even have a tach meter...
anywayz im just sayin manual isnt that hard... especially with the lancer evolution... because it's clutch connects MUCH MUCH more easily than lets say a 1985 ford ranger pickup truck =P
