Checking if parts are stolen?

I'm interested in buying a used longblock from someone locally to me. I just want to make sure that the longblock is not stolen from another car. He has no paperwork with the longblock, but claims it was an extra he had bought from a wrecked EVO.

Is there anyway to check if the parts have been stolen off another vehicle? This is my first time buying a motor and want to be on the safe side.

The vin is located on the tranmission side of the block under the spacer between engine and transmission. You can run a carfax on the car and it will say if it is stolen. That isnt always the case about the engine because some people sell the stock shortblock long before a car is stolen, however the police could confiscate a car with "stolen" parts unless you have a receipt from seller that is dated prior to theft and notorized.

Any other ways besides carfax? Like a national database of stolen vehicles?

No. Get the vin off the motor and run a carfax. Only way to do it.

I think if you have the vin number you can check it with the police, if there is no number they i don't think you can find out anything.
