Not a good way to end the year
As I was driving to work the other morning, I noticed my car is making a high pitch humming noise when I accelerate. It usually doesn't start until about 3rd gear. I read a couple of threads on here that say those symptoms usually point to a failing transfer case. I am dropping the evo off at the shop to have it looked at on Tuesday, but I am wondering if it could possibly be anything else? My brake pads are getting worn but I doubt that would be the case. The car is a 2006 evo mr with 36k miles if that helps with anything, and it is hard to pinpoint the location of the noise. This is making me lose sleep at night and I appreciate any input you guys may have! Have a good new years
My car does the same thing, with 145k on the clock. I'd have to hear the noise but I'd say its most likely the t case, that's what my problem is. As long as its not screaming you should be fine...I'm not worried about mine. I'll rebuild it when I have some spare cash.
Change the fluid in it, and make sure it's actually full. If its not filled to capacity then it's doing damage. Also, i would advise to only use the oem diaqueen for the tcase. Nothing else.

typically the humming you hear is from a failing differential box. lol in past experience i know they wine like that right before they fail. as in seize up lol.. better get it looked at but i wish you luck. i doubt tho its the transfer case. unless u launch it all the time. let us know what you find

mine does the same thing at higher RPMs when decelerating. what causes that? anything to worry about?
A transfer case can go bad early or late depending on when the fluids were changed. Most transfercases go bad because they are not properly lubricated. Not because of "abuse".. Someone probably changed the fluids some time ago and didn't fill it back up properly OR used incorrect fluid to put it back in..
