No, it is not true. Nor is it true that you have to use Mobil1. Nor is it true that you must use a Mitsubishi oil filter. According to the Magnusson whatever thingy act they can't do jack.

Yes they can void on warrenty basis for oil. Only if the car is prescibed to have a certain type of fluid in it. Like the Evo and only using synthetic. Use normal oil and kiss that warrenty goodby if they find out it was the cause of a problem.

The only way they can deny your warranty over the maintenance is if they challenge that you did not do it (correctly) and you cannot prove you did....
Save the receipts of oil, filters, etc. and keep a log of the service. You should be OK. I never go to the dealer for service but I do observed the service requirements and keep all records.

Oh God...not this again!!!

Greg, this issue has been covered in great detail on several threads on the forum. If you do a search for "break-in procedure" or something like that, you should find all the info you'd ever want...and probably wish you'd never asked!

The products you use have to meet the specification called out by the manufacturer in the owener’s manual. As long as the brand of product you use meets the specification then you are fine.

Best wishes,

I was told the same thing by a mitsu dealership, that only the certified "Evo" tech can open your hood... i argued about an hour with them, and they finally saw my way, but i won't be going there for my car after all that drama... and yeah, you gotta run synthetic from the get go... Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Redline... etc...
