What gear do you dyno in?

Just wondering what is everyone's preferred gear to dyno. I see a bunch of sheets, and already knowing its best to run in the gear closest to 1:1 (4th), I was just wondering.

And please, no comments about staying on the same dyno for consistency reasons, this is strictly related to gearing.

Thanks!

I think the number you get from the dyno is more or less useless. The key is to use the same dyno and try to keep as many of the conditions as close as possible (ie if you dyno in 3rd, always used 3rd). The real usefulness of the dyno is seeing the number change after fiddling with the car.

I'm hoping you intended on being a smartass by ignoring what I wrote.

xtnct is right, but I think that would mean 4th gear for us. Everybody I have talked to uses 3rd. Maybe it is an AWD thing?

Thats what I was hearing as well - about EVO's and AWD DSM's, etc - which is part of the reason for my asking.

The other reason, is I'd like to compare my stock dyno numbers to others' numbers and I want to know who ran in what gear while comparing.

Back in my Honda days (na GSR with JDM ITR pistons, Toda B Specs, PortFlow PnP etc), I used 3rd. The conventional wisdom that I heard was to use 3rd for our small displacement 4 cylinders. Larger motors or Forced Induction cars should use 4th gear.

Later, I heard it was best to use the gear closest to the 1:1 ratio, which would be 4th for the EVO or for my GSR. I also saw several threads about what gear would give the biggest number.

Strangely, I had people reporting that they did back to back runs in 3rd gear vs 4th gear, but people had opposite results. For example, one guy got a higher number in 3rd, another got a higher number in 4th. This was just hearsay, I wasn't there and didn't even see scanned dyno plots.

Sooooooo, does anyone have definitive answers? Specifically, what gear would be best for the EVO, and would 3rd gear show higher or lower numbers than 4th, or does it depend on the type of dyno?

Any input is appreciated. I'd like to get my EVO dyno tuned later this year (SAFC or a reflash).

Thanks,

yeah always dyno when the gear ration is 1:1. This means the output of the engine is matching the gear, so the gear isnt multiplying the power of the engine - so basically when u dyno you want the engine output power. when the ratio is 1:1 its exactly that. the gear differs from car to car, depending on how its configured, usually its 3rd or 4th gear.

It will be interesting to see what you get in 3rd compared to 4th.

4th should be higher since it is closest to 1:1 and would presumeably lose less power in the drivetrain...
