So I'm moving to Colorado and my transfer case is making nosie and I'm kinda worried about it. I know I need to re build it but I'm leaving Texas in a week I went on eBay and found one but its going to take a week to get it. What should I do?

 

How much noise? Is it screaming at all RPM?

 

This. If you're in the early stage I would chance it personally and make the trip.

 

if its not screaming or really bad put some new fluid in it and go for it.

 

It may be salvageable now for parts or is still in a condition to sell for $$$. If you drive that far, you may risk destroying a very complicated/ expensive transfer case. Doesnt seem like a wise choice. I would rather save the T-case thats worth over a $1000 and rent a car for 20$ a day.

 

If it's starting to whine a bit I wouldn't say it would be worth $1000, My rear diff was whining for over 5k miles until I replaced it. I opened it up after I took it out and the teeth weren't even in too rough of shape.

 

If you destroy the ring & pinion/ not even including a cracked case...., you're well into the 1000$ range. Comparing your LSD equipped rear end, to an ACD unit is fruitless. They're not exactly the same thing. An ACD transfer case unit is very complicated, fragile, and easy to ruin.. IMO.

 

You're correct wasn't thinking straight earlier.

But I do remember someone on here claimed to have driven over 20k miles on a whining tcase. Not sure how accurate that claim is. Also his transfer case may not even be ACD?

 

You can create a very noteable whine by simply using the incorrect fluids (ie possibly too little of friction modifier in gear oil). Which I think could have caused your problem, especially if everything in your rear end looked alright, when disassembling. By yea, most transmission shops will agree, you will only exacerbate transmission/transfer case issues if you keep driving on it.. It would be wise to park it until further/better inspection. We have no idea how loud or bad his whine is, since he never posted a video / its hard to diagnose unless you're there in person.

 

Agreed, I only used diaqueen which surprised me on how it went bad.
