Options for upgrading an VIII 9.8 turbo?

Are there any options from any of the vendors that modify stock frame turbos (FP, MAP, CBRD) to modify the 9.8 VIII turbo to one of their turbos, or is this only possible for the IX turbo?

I have a very low mileage, mint VIII turbo I'm not using and I'm curious.

Call MAP they may do an EF1 for you, capable of around 380whp-400whp mustang dyno.

Would it really be cost effective to modify a stock turbo into a EF1? How much more would it cost just to buy a NEW EF1 ????

Another question I have. This thread was mostly for the purpose of satisfying my curiosity as well as a possible game plan for the future, should I choose to go away from my current setup.

Any other options from FP or BBK or does that just apply to upgrading the IX turbo?

MAP doesnt sell EF1's. (At least on their website) they make them though. Personally I think the Evo 9 turbo would put down just as good of power. But if you really want to keep your 8 turbo and make it glorified 9 go ahead.

MAP's lineup is pretty good. EF2 EF3 EF4 and also soon to be EF2.5 results from me

I'm just seeing what possibilities exist, If any. I wasn't sure if all the upgrade plans required a IX turbo.

EF1 outflows the IX turbo by 10% IIRC. So depending on the cost difference between building an EF1 or buying a turbo it's all about personal preference. You can get a used IX turbo for cheaper than an EF1 upgrade, but if the difference of ~$150 is worth the better flow than go for it!

I haven't decided what I'll be doing with mine yet.

You can also get an EF2 built from a IX turbo as well. Even a 10.5 hotside VIII turbo. But there is only one of those in an Evo that I personally know of. Evotuner can vouch

Unless I know the P.O personally, I try to stay away from used turbos, I've been burned on parts in the past. My last car I ended up with a 40K mile IX turbo for ~500 which worked out well. I'm between keeping this one as a spare, (it only has ~20K miles on it) or seeing if there were even any options to upgrade something I have lying around with no intent on using. Plus I figure even for such a young turbo, there's virtually no market for the 9.8's.

I have 2 9.8 turbos, one on the car with 140k and the other I just bought with 42k for 175 bucks, lol. I'm thinking I'm gonna throw the new turbo in and take the old one out and use it to build something. Or port it. Idk! I'm not looking for crazy power like everyone else. 380 and I'm happy

That's what I'm saying, I feel like I'm tossing away something valuable for pennies on the dollar, it's a low mileage MHI turbocharger for crap's sake! That's why I made this thread, to see if there's anything I can do with it, other than trip over it in my garage when I'm looking for something.

Why toss it? You can make damn near 400 with an VIII turbo, and even though 90% of the people in the Evo community feel that it's not enough and they always need more, what's wrong with 400? Lighten the car and rape some *****es! I'm gonna be on stock turbos for a long time with my car, they spool quick and with supporting mods I can have a blast

If it was me I'd upgrade my 9.8 turbo to the EF1. Still need a 10.5 hotiside though haha.

And I'd have to buy that new from mitsu for ~$3XX?? or I could pick up a used 10.5 VIII turbo for $300 or so... defeating the utilitarian approach I had hoped for

So, I guess there are no option to directly upgrade the OG VIII turbo without getting a 10.5 hotside first?

You do know me. It's OEM. But I hope you already knew that, lol.

I say just contact Map and see what they will do for you, I'm sure they can do something. At the very least PnP the turbo and that will be good
