Attention painters! Are all evo 8s a single stage paint ?
I bought a Ford new painted silver with no clear coat. The silver in the paint was tiny flakes of aluminum. Within a year the paint had turned a dull gray that no amount of waxing would restore. This paint needed clear coat to continue looking good.
On the other hand, a paint that does not oxidize in the air has no need for clear coat. Clear coat is not nearly as tough as paint and must be afforded special care. Also, if the car needs body repair the repaint is more expensive.
I drive an '03 red Evo with no clear coat and the car has never been waxed. When washed it looks like new.

Single stage is not bad. It just means the clear is already mixed with the paint per say so you dont have to spray the base then clear over it. I sprayed a lot of single stage and i like it a lot more because it is easier to spray but the bad thing is you just cant wet sand and buff it as much as base-clear. You still can but have to be careful a lot more then when you have 3 or so coats of clear on it.
All evos are not single stage, I dont know who informed you guys of that? I might believe some of the solid colors are, rally red, whites and blue by you, but the metallics are definitely a basecoat/clear, which means a 2 stage setup.
It is chipping along the leading edge. I suppose these are rock chips. Anyway, another sign of how fragile clear coat is (that and the brakes). I suppose I should try to fix it now or it soon will be like yours.

Honestly when we do an estimate of a "full respray" the starting number is usually 8gs! Kinda crazy but that's why you need to get a friend who's good at painting and set up a paint booth In your garage! Lol
