Bought my First Evo, and im now experiencing the fail.

Hey, i just got my evo 8...I love it!! I sold my old car in hopes to get my evo. I love it! BUT...BUT...i think I have a possible vacuum leak. My old car(subaru WRX)was in tip top shape. I drove that crap out of this evo and it passed my QA, it pulled hard, it idled fine, coilovers made zero noise. no leaks. it was solid, with the exception of the subs and amp. not my cup of tea. Ive never had to do a boost leak test. i just want to make sure its for sure a boost/vacuum leak. i'm idling at 13-15 psi. i'm boosting to 20psi. it does have an evo 9 turbo. are those signs of a boost leak?? please let me know. i only drive 10 miles a day, so driving is pretty minimal. i havent touched boost since this afternoon for lunch. no CELs, yet. please help. thanks.

hello, and welcome... if you are idling at 13-15 psi, you have some issues... now if your idling at -13-15 vacuum, then that is about correct with stock cams when warm. what makes you think you have a vacuum leak??.

It really doesn't hurt to do one. You can make a tester for like $5. It's extremely easy and it will help you to get accustomed to the car. Here's the thread.

Yeah. I'm meant 13-15" vacuum. So that's normal? My subaru was 19-21". The reason i ask is because is seems so low, the idle is at 900 to 1100. I do plan on doing my own with that Home Depot special. Haha. I want to get a new tune just for a peace if mind. But living here I'm limited to what I can do where I can go. I got evo scan, but don't know hownto use it. Just to clarify 13-15" on stock cams is normal? If so I feel better about it. The idle doesn't go up and down but it sounds like it does. The rpm is steady. Thanks!! Any other inputs? Anyone in SC?

Welcome to owning an evo, boost leaks are common. A boost leak test should be something you should familiarize yourself with and make it part of your regular maintenance routine. I can almost assure you have some sort of boost leak. Some common ones are fuel injector seals, tb shaft seals, pcv valve, intercooler system couplers and clamps just to name a few.

+ I've seen numerous vacuum/boost lines and T's leaking too.

I set up EvoScan on customers laptops via desktop access all the time. LMK if you need anything.

Just curious bud, what program do you use to remote access?

Welcome... to let you know really quick, evoscan will not tune your evo, but ecuflash will. Want to know how to use evoscan? Buy tactrix cable, hook up to obd port, click start log. Completely useless if you dont havee ecuflash or something to tune with.

Go buy good quality hose clamps for all the hoses. Do a search some guy from the south sells a decent kit. I did this and my car idles like a purring kitten. It's a big job but well worth it. Those OEM clamps are junk and will pop on you. Scares the crap out of you on the road. Think you blew the motor or something.

great now the CEL is on. Owner told me to check all the vacuum lines. The car seems to run fine. Idle is super stable at 900-1000. Barely noticeable. When in turn the A/C it almost dies. As I was driving slow like i usually do cel came on. Time to go to vAtozone and get it read.

IAC valve dirty/bad maybe? I would start looking near the Throttle body and make sure the MAF sensor is plugged in and working.

I had an issue like this on my 91' Talon Tsi Awd.. Idles fine, but as soon as you turn on the A/C or even the fans it sinks down to 400-600 rpms. But I can't remember what the cause was. It was pretty minor though. You should get yourself a laptop sooner than later.

A little update. I was checking all the hoses and clamps and I found that the clamps for the intake was loose. So all I did was tighten it up, disconnected the battery and clear the CEL. Did a couple if spirited runs and no CEL. The vacuum is still 13-16". But idle is 900 to 1100. It's so weird! I can't figure it out. Haha. It runs and drives fine. It don't make sense because to my understanding intake to the turbo inlet is always under constant vacuum. But all the other hoses seem fine.

CeeWhizzle - when my aux fans or A/C are on the idles are still maintaining now. But definitely look for a new computer. Is EvOscan mac friendly??

That idle range sounds fine flippy. I have had two good tuners work in my car and they always like to set it around 1050. I also roll an ly and live in sebring fl. . Welcome to the evo club, you won'tregret the switch.

A bad vac leak will cause very sporadic idle and quirky engagements. If its a big vac leak, you will hear a hiss
