CP9A Questions

Hey everyone this is my first post here so ill do a quick intro. After driving an 03' OZ rally with some bodywork done for many years I have finally managed to get my hands on an 1998 jdm evo v that's been imported here to Vancouver. So after owning it for a couple of weeks I have noticed a few things and taken it to my local shop. Turns out it needed driver side inner tie rod and new lifters(lash adjusters). After doing some looking around I was sent to the guys at Racing greed who managed to get me 3g lifters for it I am waiting for them to arrive this week. Tie rod im still looking for. I had the o2 sensor and catalytic converter replaced to pass our aircare requirements here but after that I started to get gaps in power when under boost so its going back in tomorrow to have that checked. I have done a decent amount of research on this site and have read the beginner stickys but want to know more about my car can I get some good info on taking care of the car and anywhere know where to find jdm manuals for this thing that are converted to English??
Thanks folks I attached a couple pics of the car when I first got it home

Bababooie. Welcome. I had a Mirage that I converted to an Evo 5. Love the car... hopefully I can still find one someday when they're legal to bring into the US.

As for manuals. You can find the factory service manual here:
http://www.evoscan.com/vehicle-manuals

The basic things are the same between the Evo's. You'll need to become proficient at checking for boost leaks, and learn how to do it properly. That right there will probably help with your issue.

It would also be worth finding out if your car has been tuned at all, as that may be what's causing issues if you're trying to run a cat, and it's tuned without one.

I might also suggest mitsubishi lancer register, since they're based over seas and will have much more experience with a 5, as well as a used parts database.

beautiful car... I always thought the Evo 5 was one of the most aggressive, and amazing designs

Sweet car.

Pick up a tie rod from Europe or Japan and you'll be set.

PM me if you need help finding one.

Grats on the purchase! Evo V's are tuff.

As suggested, join the lancer register in the UK for good sources of info in english.
For specific stuff I can maybe help.

Regarding tuning etc., if you can find a Workshop experienced in the later model Evo's you should be fine as mechanically they are essentially the same.

And yes, lash adjusters and followers are what make the noise, not the lifters per se.

The best advice I can give about owning an older Evo: If you are removing a factory bolt (and it comes out clean), REPLACE IT, oh for the love of god replace it. You will thank me later when you arn't vice gripping a broken stud etc

Alright its been a while but I got the car on the dyno last weekend. I have a couple videos but have no idea how to post them. The set of lifters is installed and car is running nice and quiet I would recommend these lifters to anyone who is having that annoying ticking. Car misfired a couple times on the dyno so we put in new spark plugs and it went good for the next pulls. It made stock figures. Unfortunately I believe my coil packs are going because its misfiring a bit again so my question about that is ive been told that I have the same engine as the evo 8 so will the coil packs off an evo 8 work on my 5?.

Yes can see that fine. Looks clean.
Also replace the plug leads when you do Coils unless you know for sure they're newish.

Furthermore make sure the sparkplug gap is correct on each plug to the t.

hey folks quick update with some pics. Painted the rims over the weekend. Brembo's being repainted next weekend just waiting for the brembo decals to come in and waiting for the evolution V door decals to come in. ripped out a bunch of the old wiring from the old eclipse in dash unit and the gps and all that crap that came with it MESS of wires came out. Now working on getting the OBD 2 port communicating I think its a wiring issue
