Reasonable Lube Maintenance Cost?

My dealer wants approximately $65 for an oil and filter change w/Mobil 1. They also want $90 for replacing lube in both diffs. And, they want $90 for replacing lube in the transmission?

Is this reasonable?

And they want 2-3 HOURS to do it in???

Thanks!

I paid the dealer $140 to replace the fluids in the tranny and both diffs. I would never have the dealer change my oil, especially for $65. A 5 quart container of Mobil 1 is $20.00 at Walmart, and the OEM filter is $6.

I paid $65 for an hour of labor to have the dealer change the diff and tranny fluid to redline. I bought the fluids myself for about $8 per quart so I managed to save myself quite a bit of money over what they would have changed me- probably about the same as what they want from you.

Same thing with oil changes- I also bring my own oil and I end up saving quite a bit.

Do it yourself for about $60 bucks total. It'll take you about an hour total to do everything if you don't run into any problems.

Is Redline MT90, 75w90 the lube to go with? or is BG Synchro Shift better? I've read a few posts with mixed results on Redline.

I've heard 75w90 in the diffs and GM Syncromesh in the trans... that's what I'm thinking at the moment.

I think we should do a poll on who's had the best success with what tranmission fluid, etc! (dunno if there is already one)

So far the players are, Stock fluid, Amsoil, Redline, BG, ??, ??

2-3 hours is pretty reasonable for doing it in your garage with just a jack and some stands. With access to a lift, it's a 30-45 minute job.

A case of Mobil 1 75w90 synthetic gear lube, a bottle of penzoil synchromesh (same as the GM, but lower cost), a case of Mobil 1, and an OEM filter (or whatever you decide to use) will run you $50 give or take. If you have the tools*, a jack and 4 stands, a place to work, and a bit of patience you should do it yourself.

* 3/8" drive socket, 10mm-17mm sockets (may need deep well or wrenches depending on the bolts), a decent torque wrench, an oil filter remover.

Oh, even if you paid for Redline or Amsoil fluids, you'd still be under the $90 they're charging for just the diff change.
