Stealership HELP

So, finally bought the car of my dreams, Evo IX. less than 40,000 miles on it so it gets a NYS Lemon Law Warranty of 60 days with it. Within 4 days and less than 500 miles the clutch starts slipping. No launches, no abuse of any sort to it. I take it in to have them look at it and fix the CEL for an EVAP system error. They come back to me and say they want $2500 TO F***KING FIX THE CLUTCH........So.... am I screwed? what do I do? I'm so angry right now I can't think straight. I literally didn't drive the car any harder than I normally do.... I don't know what to do...

I think the first thing you need to do is make sure it's not something easily fixable by you. Have you made sure ur clutch pedal is adjusted correctly? I know mine wasn't when I got it and was causing slipping to happen.

You purchased a used car. Just buy an upgraded clutch and have another shop install it. Should be around the same price but you get a better clutch that you would have had to replace anyway.

Doesn't cost $2500 to replace a clutch.

How would I go about doing that? How do I adjust the clutch?

Aware that I purchased a used car, is it unreasonable of me to expect the clutch to last more than 4 days?

I agree. When I bought my car it didn't have much more on the clock than yours and the clutch only lasted 6 months until it had to be replaced. Kind of figuring that was coming though, not the first time I've had to have that job done on an EVO. Find a reputable shop in the area and get it done so you can start enjoying the car again!

You......I like you..... And yeah I would have taken it there if I had even an inkling that anything was wrong with it. Unfortunately I did not...

You bought a used car, and an Evo at that. That car could have been beat on everyday of it's like for the past X amount of years before it fell into your hands. For all you know it could have been a 700hp car that was turned back to stock... happens all the time.

My advice, do not deal with the stealership at all. They will hike the cost up on anything they touch/do, and in all reality a stealership doesn't know these cars as well as (for example) STM does. If it is indeed the clutch that needs to be replaced and not just an adjustment, I would buy an upgraded clutch and let STM (or whichever shop is closest to you that you trust) work on the car. It's unfortunate but it happens man. Good luck

I agree get the car to STM they'll take care of you.

Now lets say you cannot afford a clutch job on the car. I say you immediately trade the car in or if there is a 30 day buy back policy at the dealer take them up on it and get yourself into something else.

It's one thing to own an EVO cheap enough these days but be prepared for the maintenance.

And no way a clutch job is 2500.

Single Disc your looking about 1k a parts and labor. Add fluids

^^ Agreed. Dealerships may have a "mitsubishi tech" but those guys seriously don't know sh**. As for adjusting the clutch to see if that may be the problem. Google "How to adjust clutch evo 8". The first link should either send you to youtube or back to these forums. I believe the video is from Jacks Transmission. Not positive. Other then that take her to STM. Those guys are a great group of people to deal with and know all there is to know about our cars. Good luck man!

Yeah, I can imagine, if coming from the sedate regular car world, this would be a shock. However, Evo's being half race car, they consume clutches like gasoline. It is just another consumable. Playing the Evo game is expensive.

The secret of owning these crazy cars is a shop full of tools and the service manual almost memorized. Then all you are paying for is parts.

Thanks for the advice, I do appreciate it.

As far as coming from the regular car world, I'm not quite from that one. My other car is an Audi S4 putting down some good numbers on stock turbos. Those cars are not nearly as "racecar" like as an Evo for sure but the maintenance on them is absurd. The thing that really gets me is that they said I abused the clutch on this while my stock clutch S4 is at 201k while still putting down some good power.

Again thanks for the support and help guys.

If I can personally give you one good tip and I'm sure alot of the community would agree. If you want it to last and be somewhat reliable, make sure you do it right the first time. No garbage cheap parts, no ghetto *** shops, etc. Good luck man and take care.

Average cost of a good clutch.. $600.
Average cost to have it installed by a good shop.. $500.

I had to do a clutch on my car a week after buying it. Clutches are wear items, like brakes..

What i'm trying to say is, do whatever you need to do to calm down. Then work on getting a decent clutch put into the car. One thing everyone can say is that Mitsu can't put a proper clutch in these cars if it meant their business.
My suggestion, go with Exedy.
