GSR EVO 1 problems

have currently just changed my turbo on my evo 1 as the one in it had blown it was currently running a tdo5h and I recently replaced it with a tdo4 till the other one gets rebuilt. Have put new turbo in and it just has so much lag and really have acceleration problems, currently have blue smoke pulsating out the exhaust and when I try to boost it drops a hell of a lot of smoke out the back end, cant really understand the problem, would it be because I have dropped down from a bigger turbo? or is there something internally wrong with car?

some info or help would be a great help as I don't really want to move on replacing things until I know what's wrong

currently have custom intercooler kit, B.O.V, have changed cams to aftermarket overhead cams as well 42mm waste gate

was running fine with all these mods until turbo had blown

is it possible to also put a late model evo engine into a evo 1,2,3 car???just out of curiosity thanks

Maybe it is just the turbo dumping oil.

Agreed! Sounds like the turbo you put in is crapped.

Also agreed. The TD04 you put in was probably damaged (oil seals likely). Once you get the rebuilt one back in there it should be fixed if this was the issue. Otherwise you likely have ring damage.

Also. As far as a later model engine swap. It can't be done easily because the 4-9 have everything flipped 180 degrees so everything will essentially be in the wrong place. It can be done with some fairly extensive modification or swapping from late models but rebuilding a 1-3 engine would be the better choice in my opinion.

It could very well be the oil seals that are gone on the turbo; get another 16G back on there and see what happens.
The Evo 123 had weak ringlands, one that's broken could explain it too. The later Evo (4-10) engines will not fit in the early Evo, they're rotated 180 degrees and won't mount up. Your best bet if you want to replace the motor is a 7-bolt 4G63 from a 1993-1999 DSM or just rebuild your original motor.
