"Cast - steel"
"Cast - steel"
Hi guys,
I'm on the verge of replacing the O2 housing…
the stock dump is cast iron or cast steel?
its obviously ugly looking and with the rusty appearance, just like the OEM manifold.
O2 housing like Megan and Invidia etc advertise as "Cast Steel"
will it end up like the stock ugly thing?
I was told to steer clear from stainless steel o2 housing as they are apparently known to "crack" and generally very thin. and not as robust as cast etc…
so will cast steel loose its silver aluminium colour in time?
thanks

The Invidia O2 is cast stainless. It won't rust, but it will turn brown from the heat. I had it coated with Swain Tech White Lightning. I've had it for four years, and it looks like new.
you able to take a pic?
Brown as in… end up looking like the stock OEM manifold & OEM o2 housing, or not that bad?
hmm white lightning aye… ill have a look into this in the meantime
Stainless Steel will Bronze/Brown over time due to the oil vapors in the engine compartment contaminating the surface of the metal and discolor the metal.
No, it will not look like the OEM rusted Iron.

the oil, whether skin or engine, isn't the cause of the discoloration...
Rouging is a thin film, usually reddish-brown or golden in color, of iron oxide or hydroxide, typically on stainless steels. The contrast between this film and shiny metal accentuates this aesthetics problem. The rouge film typically wipes off easily with a light cloth (Figure 1), but it reforms while the process fluid is in contact with the stainless steel
