Brand and weight

I just bought an 06 evo with quite a bit of motor work. It was dynoed at 610 awhp. HKS cams, GRP aluminum rods, diamond pistons, oversized stainless valves, titanium retainers are some of the extras. I have had an evo before and used the recommended Mobil 10w30 but was not sure if I should use a different brand and/or weight in this one. Any suggestions? I am an amateur when it comes to the mechanics of these cars but love to drive them. Thanks

not knowing who built the motor then i would suggest sticking with a fully synthetic 20w-50 oil like amsoil, valvoline vr1

I would run Brad Penn 20w50 in the warm summer months and 15w40 in the colder winter months. Stay away from Mobil 1. If you must run a parts store oil choose Valvoline VR1.

Best suggestion is if you can find out who built the motor ask them their recommendation

VR1 and BP are the popular choices here for built motors

I had my Brad Penn oil gel up on E85 and after contacting them, they tell me not to use their oil with E85. I'm sure its good oil if you use premium fuel.

I now use M1 15w-50 racing in my Evo. Other M1 thats good is the 0w-40. The other M1 oils I don't care for much except the high milage stuff.

On the weight, it really depends who built the engine and what they suggest.

This is bad advice, you let your car sit for months. Look at how many people run BP with zero issues. Some of them were very well known and respected shops. I would not suggest M1, they have gone down in quality. Also, if you have an FP turbo the only M1 oil that is acceptable to use is for motorcycles.

FTFY

M1 HM, 5/40, and 0/40 are excellent oils with countless UOAs to prove so

It was in my car for only 4 months with low miles. To me thats unacceptable and I'm not going to change it out every month and waste money. If you're happy then keep running it but its not for me.

The M1 15w-50 also has good VOA's like the 0-40. I do agree that the other M1 that are GF-5 spec aren't as good and I steer clear from those. FP says to not run GF-4 (possibly GF-5) oils in some of their turbos. The 15w-50 and 0w-40 are not GF-4 or GF-5. Not all M1 oils are the same.

There's other good oils out there like Amsoil and Joe Gibbs but I like the M1 since its easy to find at Walmart and Cheap. Just my preference and everyone here is going to have a favorite oil. Use what works for you and what you feel is best after extensive research.

Mobil 1 0w40 is a really good oil. I posted some interesting data in my oil anaylsis thread about it. Bascially I found that this 0w40 at cold start up would idle at same oil pressures as the 10w30 I was using, dropped down to its normal operating pressures at warm/hot sooner, and at full operating temps after all fluids have been warmed up and what not, the oil pressures of the 0w40 were 1-2 psi lower at idle than 10w30 I was using. For me its more important since Im generally seeing higher oil pressures from the balance shaft delete, and just concerned about running too high of an oil pressure. This was back to back testing using same oil filter, nothing changed. It also has been the only oil so far to completely eliminate my annoying random lifter tick noise.
