Exploding spark plugs.
Exploding spark plugs.
Hi all , new to evolutionm and I regret to inform that my first thread is not a positive one.
The long and short of it is as follows.
I was driving last night at approximately 60kph. When a deafening crack occurred. Immediately I pulled over and began inspecting.
The car was running horrendously rough and the sound terrible. Shutting the engine down immediately I opened the bonnet to reveal that the engine cover had been blown off by the no 3 spark plug from the left.
After managing to put it back in I nursed it home. The trip was terrible rough idles and a wrx sounding engine.
This morning looking at the plug it was revealed to have zero gap in it. To make matters worse the threading in the head is now screwed.
I have no idea how this occurred any light shed on the situation would be greatly appreciated to avoid further headaches.
Thanks in advance evotsx.

it sounds like you may have had alot of detonation and heat inside the motor which may have blown out the spark plug. Please list your mods as well as your recent tune logs if you have them available.
Hi there,
I had the car towed to the mechanics this morning.
They are talking about removing the head and replacing all the internals and machining it.
Upon closer inspection there were some aluminium shavings in the spark plug hole.
The plug was completely intact, I firmly believe that the issue was an over tensioned plug as on idle the car would tap and on start up.
Would heli coliing the plug be sufficient to fix the issue or has internal damage already been done ?
Mods currently on the car are as follows:-
Trust titanium TBE;
GReaddy intercooler;
155 Walbro fuel pump;
Exceedy organic clutch;
K&N Airfilter;
Dyno tune - now running 24psi boost;
