Wasted spark can be a PITA because you might have a miss fire on #3, but it's actually because #1 has been toasted. You live, you learn though, oh well!

Good question, I really dont know, but I think it wouldnt change it since that is something programmed into the ecu itself

I am running the Spoolin Up Blue CDI system($699 USD). On the stock coils I was having crazy spark issues, once I switched out to the Blue everything has been amazing.

If you are not going to make crazy power the normal COP system will work just fine. I know there are cars into the 700+whp range on the SU COP system.

The Blue is still waste spark. There is no need for direct fire on the evo.

Get used coils from a corolla or yaris and build the connectors via spoolin up. Go to your local hardware store and fab a plate for them to sit on and get the bolts too.

It's very easy to do and coils are readily available in case one fails.

I don't fully understand the difference between CDI and non CDI, but from what I can find, the CDI basically jump starts the COP by stepping up the starting low voltage (12V) to 250V or more. It looks like the CDI helps provide a stonger spark in high RPMs. So I wonder if there are any power gains at 7000-9000 RPM ranges.

The way I understand it is that a CDI produces a very short but high energy spark, so it can fire that spark multiple times per ignition event, vs one longer single spark.
