Buying an Evo, tell me if this is a good deal please?

Hey guys, before you start hating on my non-expertise, I own a 2006 Ford Mustang GT so imports are foreign to me (pun intended).

Anyways, there's an '03 Evo 8 for sale with 170k miles. Mods are HKS BOV (will change this when I get it, I know it's **** lol), a stage 4 clutch (no clue why he chose stage 4, maybe someone here can tell me), and an Apexi Turbo Timer. He's asking $11,995 but I got him down to $10,500. Is this a good deal? It's black with gold enkei wheels. So in other words it's pretty much bone stock. He claims to have changed the timing belt to an OEM belt but unless I see receipts, I'll change it when I get it. Is this a good deal? I'm not sure the condition of the paint, I'll assume it's an average conditioned paint, although I haven't gone to look at it yet. I'll test drive it as well, are there any pointers to test driving? Anything specific to look for?

Thanks,
Adam.

With that high of mileage I would suggest trying to find a "local" evo shop to look over the car...

I can see why you'd say that. Will they check it out for free or does it cost? If it's free I'll probably send him to the closest Evo shop (he's in Atl, I know there's a few around) and if it's not much I'll get them to fix it, worse case I won't buy. Does that sound ok?

Drive the car first. Sounds like a good deal.pull the oil dip stick and see hows oil look.look under the car for crazy leaks.start the car look for what color is the smoke.drive it or let him to drive.if you can do the leak down test so you can tell how much life left in that motor.good luck.

Ask the seller to split the cost of the inspection with you. Tell him even if you decide not to buy it, he will then have the inspection to show the next potential buyer. If he declines, he probably knows the shop will find something really wrong.

I told him to take it to a shop and he claims to have no reputable shops around GA, I told him TopSpeed or Forged (which I have heard bad review of) and he said both TopSpeed and Forged aren't reputable and that he has a friend with an STi that TSM kept giving him problems and he had to eventually replace his motor. He said he has a receipt for his clutch and timing belt service that he'll send me later, I will see how long ago the timing belt has been on there.

Either TopSpeed or Forged should be fine. Its just an inspection, not an engine rebuild.

You basically just need them to check compression and make sure the drivetrain is all good.

inspection...and your right..not sure why you need a stage 4 clutch if there are no real modifications that support the reasoning behind it. Its overkill.

Im willing to bet the reasoning behind the stage 4 clutch is because that car was beat on pretty heavily hearing you say he changed timing belt did the clutch and has hks bov and enkei wheels tells me he seems to know something about the car to do timing belt and he probably put the car back to stock to do a semi part out on it such as selling aftermarket fmic turbo exhaust things of that nature this way he can make more money from the car

Like previous people said the two shops may not ne the best but they deal with cars on a daily basis they can cpearly tell if the car has been abused and if there is any parts in question on it if the owner of the car disagrees then tell him no thanks that honestly seems little steep to right on point but is high miles

It's gonna be tough to adapt to that

Well it's the stock Enkei's, just powdercoated gold (if I'm not mistaken). Also I have no way to tell if he's parted it out back to stock, is there anything I should look for to be able to tell?

I've heard from numerous sources (websites, forums, evo owners themselves) that HKS BOV's are the worst for evos. I may be wrong, you guys know more than I do

Can you elaborate on the clutch thing? How can I find the hole? You wouldn't have any pictures would you?

Simply look around to see if he is selling evo parts or even ask him. Just ask like well im wanting to _______ with it would you happen to have anything that could help me get closer if i buy the car from you? That way you make it seem as if your not questioning the car just making some talk and maybe he will be like oh yeah i have this stuff i made x amount of power blah blah blah you know. If he doesnt then he may be telling the truth about it. You can also look at how things are done on the car such as harness clips that hold it in place missing bolts or anything anywhere things like that will give you clues. Those are the things i would do if it were me in your shoes.
