Yet another "Emissions" thread
Hi all,
Long time reader, first time poster!
Here in New Zealand, we have some ****ed up emissions laws which have been put into effect in the last last year. It has caught out many importers, which have caused an influx of cars unable to be registered for use on New Zealand roads.
Because of laws, my 2006 JDM Mitsubishi Evo IX theoretically will be denied registration for road use.
However, you are able apply to be exempt from the Emissions Laws. In our case, out of pure luck, we have been given an opportunity to modify the vehicle to adhere to Japan 2005 Emission Regulations (Japan 05).
The car has already passed Japan 00 and Japan 03, however it will need to pass the emissions for Japan 05. Which is CO 0.05%/vol. At the current state, it is doing CO 0.08%/vol.
The test is conducted at IDLE after 10 minutes of warm up.
I am going to heatwrap the entire system pre-cat and take a an emissions test to gauge where I am at.
For the mean time, is there any advice as to how I can modify my exhaust system to pass?

Some things that I've heard working is using a small amount of pure alcohol. Another that some of the drifters that I know here put thin washers between the cat and down-pipe so you have a slight exhaust leak. If you have a tuner you could be able to ask him to tune your car also for emissions testing which is what I usually do.
Not really sure about actual exhaust modification but I recommend prior to the test make sure all accessories are off and the car is nice and hot before the 10 minute idle. The cat is most efficient when at temp. If I remember correctly, as temperature increases it leads to a decrease of hydrocarbons but too much of an increase will raise the oxides of nitrogen. Some of the worst vehicle emissions occur after a cold start, for this reason some companies did research on electric heaters and other methods to get the cat hot before a cold start.
