What COP is best for my Evo?
What COP is best for my Evo?
I've been searching and doing a little research for a while, but can't come up with 100% answer to my own question. I recently broke into the 700's (MD) and am told it's time for a COP kit. I'm running speed density on an AEM computer. Question is, do I need CDI or not? What specific difference does it make? As you all know there are several different kits that SparkTech offers, a couple with minimal differences. I've noticed many debates between SparkTech and Spoolin'Up, is SparkTech that much better for the money difference? Thanks in advance for any info.
Before anyone says it, yes I did use the search feature but would like some direct info.

COP are all going to be the same. Home-made, SparkTech, Spoolin'Up. They all perform the same and use basically the same exact parts
CDI will be different but I can't tell you when or why it would be better. I know people running normal COP (non-CDI) making 800+

my car ran worse with COP. i thought it was a faulty unit, but i have read a few people saying the same. maybe check it out a bit. you can make a lot of power on stock stuff.

I personally run an Sparktech CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) set up and have had no issues with it. The main advantage of a CDI system is that it increases the voltage available to the spark plug; which in turn will allow for a longer, more intense spark. A non-CDI system will not.
At your level IMO you should be buying a CDI system....I really wouldn't bother just buying a non-cdi set up. But then again there are people running stock coils at 700whp, so really its all up to what you want and what you can afford.

Down the road I will be doing another engine set up and going for quite a bit more power, I don't want to have to buy a coil set up twice. Cdi sounds like the way to go, is there anything special that needs to be wired or is it all plug and play?
Yes. Its not hard to install. I think theres even a thread around here where someone shows how to put one in. But its pretty self explanatory (it comes with instructions). You juat have to find a spot where you want to mount the ignition box.
I'm in the same exact boat as you. I'm planning on ordering the spark tech basic cdi setup, it sucks to fork out ~$1000 for an ignition but I personally like to do things right the first time and don't want to have buy things twice. And with the amount of head room, I know that I'll never make more power than these handle.
