Porsche's, I can specifically speak to the Boxster, holds quite a bit of data. I've seen data of it of 2000 miles old.

Why not post this question to someone with the ability to access the info in the ECU.

Techtom system etc. Ask Al what info he can access in the ecu.

Man, if you get in an accident going 130 that's severe enough to deploy the bags you're probably dead anyway, I wouldn't sweat it. Just make sure you're doing it away from any innocent bystanders, personally I hate street racers who challenge me on public (and usually very busy) roads. Actually, in general I hate street racers.

Many of the systems have a lot of divirsified monitoring. on the Evo though, I don't think they have much intercommunication.

I have never flamed anyone on any board of any kind but I am afraid I have to now.

Mister2zx3...you and people like you would lead us to a country with total governmental control and we all have seen how thats worked out every time it's tried. The government doesn't know what's best for us, you sure as hell don't know what's best for us. If you want to give up your rights and freedoms that our forfathers have died for then just head across one of the oceans and go live out your dream, cuz I sure don't want you voting in my free country. Just because you don't have the guts or brains to run your own life doesn't mean I/we can't. Why not have cameras on all the streets and just install "lojack" type chips on us as soon as we pop out of the womb too...just in case the feds want to track us later on. They want the GPS in the cell phones to track criminals, not because the care about safety issues. They want to be able to remotely disable our cars too, in the off chance any given car is involved in a pursuit situation.

I know I sound like one of those paranoid geeks, I assure you I am not. I am just a normal guy that cares about keeping my/our business my/our own. I don't want the car that I paid for helping to convict me, is that unreasonable? No one ever thought "Echelon/Carnivore" would ever be possible either but guess what....

Sorry mods, I understand if you have to put me in time-out, but guys like this just **** me off.

i was talking with a sales person cause i'm looking at getting a new m3, and i asked them if they void the warranty if i take the car to track days or auto x it. they said no, except the car does record your engine rpm as they had a lot of the new m3s a few years ago blowing motors from over reving. they also can tell if you go over 100 miles an hour in the first thousand miles, or over 6000 rpm. do either of those and it also completely voids your engine warranty. with how cheap memory is nowadays, a car could easily record a huge amount of data.

for a fun question, GM products have onstar systems, when you throw an engine light or anything else goes wrong with the car, it automatically sends the info to onstar and they call you to see if you are alright and can send out a tow truck if something is really bad. if the air bags are deployed they automatically call for a medic and police. now if the car can do all that, why wouldn't it simply send out a signal just to be filed for future reference that the car was going 160mph. they could even log exactly where you were doing 160 because all onstar cars have gps locators in them. they could tell you exactly what street, direction, speed, engine rpm, gear you are in, throttle position, maybe even the radio station you were listening to. doesn't mean they store all that data because it wouldn't be cost effective to do so, but they definately have the technology. the police could even potentially check with your cell phone company to see how fast you were traveling at the time if they bothered to save that information. your cell phone has a gps locator in it. anybody who has a little garmin gps unit knows how cool they are, and how much you can store on a tiny little 8 mb stick.

anyway, i'm sick of typing.

Wow.. Sorry for having a right to have an opinion. I'll stick to all my personal protections and privacy out of public.. But in public, there are too many folks getting away with stuff that the good guys are paying for. I'm tired of paying for others crimes. That's all. I still can do whatever I want on private property. We want criminals being stopped for breaking the law right? I'll gladly take the black boxes for public usage vehicles every day. If you want to play, play safely, or else pay the price. It would be nice to see black boxes used by insurance companies as well to give discounts or penalties for. Driving is a priveldge, not a right.

I believe GM was the one that started this in partnership with one of the big insurance company. As far as I know the dealership has to disclose that there is a "Black Box" in your particular vehicle and you have the right to not to have it on your vehicle. This is just like "Big Brother." Those boxes just don't record data from an accident but they can monitor you on where you are if they wanted to. If you ever hear one of the OnStar commercial where the guy locked his keys inside his car and he called OnStar from his cell phone and opened it via satellite. This is only the beginning. If you guys don't already know, some of our cell phones has a chip and they can track you on where you are.

I believe you are mixing up 2 different things here. There was a partnership between a car company and Geico (I think that was the ins co) where the insurance company had data recorders installed in certain cars. Having these data recorders onboard gave the individuals who owned the cars a special discount...it was like a 'pay by the mile' insurance instead of a package that covers unlimited mileage. But that trial was a failure and the insurance company stopped offering it to people.

This is completely different than the systems built into cars airbag deployment modules or ecu's that record info directly from the cars built in sensors.

There should be a disable black boxing option for the people who would not want to be tracked. Why can't the lawyer's push that through. That would make everyone happy. Mister2zx3 for his car as well as me for my car (I prefer my wherabouts and speed to be my business).

Ultimately you should enable/disable this option like a valet switch.

I can attest to the dealership knowing information when a CEL light comes on. I had a PO300 occur a few days after I bought my car. I told them straight up what happened. I sprinted to 100mph then backed down to 75mph (speed limit) and the light came on after I went back on the gas. Well, they told me exactly how fast I was going when I picked the car up!

xtnct, try doing a search on google "disable event data recorder"....You might find it interesting to know that people have already successfully disabled them. I think they remove a fuse...or removed a diode from a circuit board.
