Advise on my IX MR dilemma

I have a 2006 IX MR which i purchased in 2007 with 10000 miles on it. I love the car and it's been my DD ever since. It has 176k miles on it and it still has the original clutch. It's never been raced or in a accident and is garaged at all times. A year ago on the way to work it lost power and I could hear the engine didn't sound right. I happened to be near the Mitsubishi dealership. Just from the sound the dealership told was that there was problem with the bottom end and it would cost 7k for parts and labor to fix. I towed it back to my house and garaged it. I brought my wife a 2015 Outlander GT and now use her 2008 Outlander as my DD with the hopes of fixing my MR. Here's my dilemma, I probably could get my car fixed cheaper than the dealership quoted me. I could get a used bottom end or a brand new factory one. My wife is on my *** to do something with it. I would love to take one last ride in it. I loved that car. I would like to sell it though. I could sell it as is to someone that could get it fixed. What would you guys do? Please help a brother

Fix It.

Parts for the IX are not hard to find nor are they super expensive.

No other car is going to be as fun to drive until you get up into 6 digit territory IMO

At least have a shop diagnose it first.

If I had to make this decision what I would do would depend on the condition of the rest of the vehicle.

176,000 miles on the stock clutch ?? What ? You must have babied this car. Is this a fully stock evo? I've never heard of a spun bearing or bent rod on a stock evo unless there was sever oil starvation taking place.

If I were you, I would keep it and fix it. Obviously you enjoy driving it, don't settle for anything less. Many of us here on evom are on our second or third engines already so don't feel bad about it.

If it was me and I was 110% sure it was internal and I already had a DD, I would keep the car as a fun project, do not drive the car with damaged internals, start doing a strip down. You could drop the oil first and check for metal, do a compression check to see what shape the bore is in. You could take off the head and inspect the valves, or ramp it up and drop out the bottom end if you think its a big end problem.

I'd go with a quality 2.3 stroker kit replacement kit and DIY for most of it except the machining of the head, I'd go some cams and valve springs too plus all the usual bolt ons. You guys in the states have so many options to run with so why go for it. If your going to sell it with a motor problem you would only get a few grand for it or you could part it out for a lot more trouble and a few grand more.

By the way, wives are payed to tell you to get rid of it, we all have to manage that at time to time, this is your time now :0)

My car was definitely babied. The condition of the car is very good exterior and interior. Never been in a accident and never let anyone eat or drink in my car. The car is basically stock except for exhaust and intake. It's only been in the shop when I broke down once. The cause was a hole in a IC pipe. I can't find the Mitsubishi print out but it stated I needed a new short block. I was going to get it fixed and drive it for a while. Not going to lie. I love the car but I was thinking about getting a new 2016 STI or a 2016 Ford Focus RS being that Mitsubishi doesn't make the EVO anymore. A new short block will run me $2500-$2800 I think. I could get the cylinder heads cleaned up and I think I'm good to go.

Depending on what the issue is not sure why you would need a new short block. If you want a reputable shop to look at your car and you are willing to have it sent someone where PM me. Your car will be in good hands..

Fix It Sounds like the car is in good shape may take some long nights in the garage but it will be worth every sip of that victory beer when it is done

Keep it. Make it your project car. Rebuilding an engine will be a great educational experience.

I wouldn't do anything until I knew exactly what was wrong with the engine.

It seems like you should be able to find a short block to build while your car is down! If you can find a temporary daily driver that's the way to go. Then you can build it how you want it.
