Why aren't you in college? Get a Ralliart as the next step up from the Lancer you had. Go to school and plan on the RA taking you through school and 24 months into the real world beyond graduation. Plan ahead to buy your Evo when you are established. Until then work your Starbucks job and put at least $100 a week into savings.

That gives you $5200 a year times 4 yrs of college and 2 yrs of real world after graduation which equals over $31k not counting interest. Combined with the residual on your Ralliart you can walk in and get just about any car you want on the planet and most of them with no payments since you already paid it all.

Plan A: Starbucks where in 2-3 yrs if all goes well you can manage a store and make $3x,xxx annually with a ceiling of what, maybe $50k?

Plan B: College and working at Starbucks saving $100 a week where in 4 yrs you can start a job at a beginning salary of at least $3x,xxx with a ceiling of $xxxK depending on field as well as over $20k saved up when you graduate and if you wait another 2 yrs after graduation to get out of your Ralliart have over $30k saved up plus interest to put down on the new car.

If you are that determined and think you can do it, then get an Evo. It's just that your reasoning is too optimistic and not realistic. We are all talking from experience, and there is a big reason why we all have the same answer.

I say a very good car for you is the Impreza, which you will be able to financially manage (there are great deals and interests rates going on). It is not an Evo, but you'll still appreciate it.

You want an EVO? Save $15,000. If you can save that much money you: are likely responsible enough to handle it; won't have a ridiculous car payment, only an outrageous one; you can get better financing; and will understand what having little $ for going out is. Just remember a car is a horrible investment.

BTW - If you are not going to drive fast, spend your 30K on some luxory like a BMW/Infiniti.

Buying a new car is a bad idea. Keep the one you have.

If you live with your parents, how long are you going to mooch off them? Is it really fair to them for you to buy a car and not pay for room and board, and car insurance?

Are you going to move out after college? (Assuming you can find a good job.)

How old do you plan to be when you move out of your parents' house, 25, 30?

I’m in a similar position (18 looking to get an S2000), and it sounds like you won’t have the resources for an evo in the next couple years. I’d guess a good measure of when you’re ready to buy an evo will be when you have a big enough budget to “stretch” (like you’re thinking about doing now) to buy 2 evos. Also, think about investments…$30k is a pretty decent chunk of cash and a liability such as a car is gonna do nothing but take cash away from you. My $.02

Well, once more for whatever it's worth. Get a Ralliart and have a workable payment, more reasonable insurance, and some money left over to go on a date or whatever. Heck, go all the way out on that limb and open an IRA account and put money away for later. In the long run you'll be far FAR ahead compared to buying an Evo now.

If you really want it, go for it, becuase we have no idea what the future holds: the evo may be gone next year or the year after, the world is running out of oil supply, etc.. I'm working as hard as I can to get the EVO as a first car with the help of my parents, but I have to put down about 5-8K. Put down at leats 5K and you'll have amonthly of about $400, put more down and it decreases even more. And heed all the warnings about maintainance, the first year will be a tough one. I don't believe you replace the stock tires in 6 months, but you will need winter tires if you live in a climate like Chicago. And easy on the clutch too.
