Holy Buzz Batman, reverberation at 4K RPM

I have a 2005 Evo 8 RS. Here are my mods:

  • Buschur 2.3 Stroker w/ Balance Shaft Delete
  • GSC S2 272 Cams
  • BBK Blue Full Turbo
  • Exedy Twin Disk Clutch
  • Intake
  • Precision 1000CC injectors
  • Walbro 450
  • K&N Intake
  • ETS Intercooler

So my car sounds normal, but at around 3.8 to 4K, the engine begins to reverberate and at around 6k+, it gets really really loud.

My guess something rubbing on another thing, maybe the exhaust manifold heatshield. Has anyone heard a sound like this before?

I have a video here.WARNING: THIS MAY KILL YOUR EARS. TURN DOWN VOLUME!!

A bit late now, its already dark. I've read about the down pipe possibly getting in way of the subframe or ACD. I can post some pics tomorrow.

Fudge, It seems like the oil pump or balance shaft is out of phase. The place (dealership in Chicago) I got this from was SUPPOSED to be reputable.

Instead I got a car with a external coolant leak, ticking EBCS, idling issues (dies occasionally when clutch suppressed rolling to a stop) and now it looks like the oil pump is out of phase which is gonna cost me a crap ton of money to fix.

I'm beyond angry.

Edit: Looks like the balance shaft may be still in the car. I had assumed it wasn't.

where is the leak from? i believe the balance shaft being out of phase (timed incorrectly even tho it lines up with the notch) can cause major vibration issues from low to high rpm. I BELIEVE, not 100% on that

Sounds like its coming from the center dash leaning towards the passenger side.

Maybe DP hitting the tie bars? Check the clearances maybe a few washers to solve the problem.

It's possible, thats what I'm hoping.

Dumb question, if the car does not have a balance shaft, then it is impossible for the oil pump to be out of phase/time correct?

Thanks. I'll definitely do that. I had a friend take off my serpentine belt, and without removing the oil pan (we ran out of time it was getting late) surmised that the balance shaft are indeed deleted. He wasn't able to 100% confirm though.

Assuming it is deleted, he said it could be the crank or the clutch causing the vibration. Have anyone of you seen something like this happen due to the crank/clutch?

the crank should not cause vibration, weather its a 2 liter crank or a 4g64 crank, balance shaft delete and also billet motor/tranny mounts however will cause crazy vibrations

Not an answer to your problem but just want to say I feel your pain. I had a buzzing/rattle noise for the past 2 months when the car would get above 4k. It sounded like it was coming from the dash or inside the dash. It was very hard to pin point. I was doing my oil change and I put my light up on the part where the windshield wipers are and I noticed that the plastic cover was very loose. Secured it and it went away. It wasn't as loud yours though.

If I was you, go through your engine bay and underneath the car and wiggle things around before tearing into the engine. Good luck and let us know what you find!

didn't read previous posts so i apologize if this is redundant. Check your exhaust, i've been having problems with my flanges hitting my drive shaft and it made the weirdest noise. (i can post a video if you'd like)
