Selling the EVO for a BMW 135i?
Hi guys,
As the title says, i am thinking about selling my JDM EVO 8, and have been currently looking at bmw 135i's.
I've had the car for 4years now, its been extremely fun, hasnt caused me too many hassles (touch wood**). it was my daily for 2years but the past 2 years has only been a weekend warrior. its pretty much full bolt ons, 9turbo, cams, coilovers, brake upgrade, hankook rs-3 tires.
cars seriously a blast to drive, im just at a dilemma where i feel like trying another platform. the 135i seems to tick all the boxes im looking for (inline6, turbo, RWD, subtle sleeper status).
i seriously just thought about selling the car not long ago, and once my friend caught wind of it, he mentioned it to someone, and before i knew it they are coming to check the car out this weekend to potentially buy it. I am in no rush to sell so my price/negotiations will b fairly firm, and wont budge unless i think im getting a good deal. other factors that have enticed me to sell are the unwanted attention i get, from either cops/ppl trying to race(although i dont mind this too much), and lil ****s hovering too clsoe to the car > as well as recent spike in evo thefts where im from.
Just wondering if anyone has driven both/owned both or similar (135/335 etc), and has any input if im making a wrong decision or not. I have actually heard some ppl suggesting the 135i handles quite well even in stockish form and is isnt just purely a straight line type car, but i could hardly imagine it out handling the evo (i will def test drive one soon to find out though).
I know I'm on the evom site but if anyone has any non-bias views that would be good to hear lol !

I'd sleep on it for a while man. Obviously you'll find a biased opinion from everyone here. But I'll be honest, I considered a 135 for a while...as an addition to my stable. I'd never sell the Evo, period, but certainly wouldn't replace it with a bmw if I were looking for comparable fun car. I was very impressed with the N54/55 powerplant for a while, but my tastes have changed. That engine will likely put a smile on your face, and you'll get to mod it and make good power, but I don't think it will float your boat for long. I know TONS of people who have had a n54/55 variant and it was bought and sold within a year. Bolt-ons and tuning free up tons of power, but it doesn't drive in a way that you are used to. You'll have a car with some ***** but trust me, there will be a big gap in your automotive life that the evo has left empty.
I've driven them, they pull pretty hard, but they don't knock your socks off. I've been in a lot of fast cars. The evo is the only one where my passengers lose stuff out of their pockets from it whipping them around so hard. Anyone sitting in the front seat finds items from their pockets somewhere in the back seat. No bmw will do that. They're too refined and smooth. The Evo is violent and smelly. A bmw makes a decent blend of sport, comfort and convenient features. Each of those things being adequately achieved across most modern models, but does none exceptionally well. As you already know, the Evo does several things exceptionally well, and none of them are compromised for the sake of comfort or convenience. The only compromise made is having 4 doors.
If the bmw characteristics appeal to you, then make the switch. Just don't expect the 2 cars to have much of anything in common with regard to driving experience. Decide where your driving priorities lie and pick the car that will cater to the majority.
From what I have gathered, most people sell who sell their Evo miss it very much, and many buy another one after some time. The price of them is not going down. I would not want to have to buy another one. You are in a different market, but I suspect Evo value is similar down there. That may be an incentive for you to sell, I'd just hate for you to regret it.

summed it up in a nut shell, down here Evo 9s and 8s are getting harder to find in good condition, 135s are a dime a dozen, a bit like a poor mans M3. You'll be back after a few years wanting that fun factor, it gets in you blood

wow i thought they would blow evos away on straights. i actually heard they handle pretty well in corners too with a few suspension mods? i went in a stock one on the weekend and was pretty impressed with its handling and power!
power is no problem. 50% more power with stock turbos is very easy, and 3L 6cyl 2turbos make a lot of torque from 3000-6000rpm.
for the handling, the rear gets really soon very nervous on higher speed even on straights (german autobahn) on the cornering (no heavy racetrack use) the BMW M Suspension was aweful. Since I got my EVO I realized it more and more how bad the 135i cornering was ;-)
sure with suspension mods and a nice differancial the car handles very nice, but I still would take the EVO ;-)
but, depends on your interessts. for power the engine is a new 2JZ ;-) but if you are on many racetracks I wouldn`t change a EVO which you already have for a 135i
I personally felt very restricted in working on my car, flashing and remapping the car is from the process easy as with the EVO (writing maps for the load based ECU is a bit tricky, compared to the EVO), but changing anything on the electrical parts normaly needs a coding, I really hate that coding thing. if you want to run decent power with 100% E85 you need a port injection system as the direct injection cannot handle this amount of fuel, LPFP and HPFP also needs to be upgraded at some point of power.

okay guys so i ended up selling my evo8.. i had an offer i couldnt refuse .
i am slowly steering away from the 135i idea, not cos it wouldnt be fun or anything, but because i am hearing a lot of problems and issues/repairs that comes with it.. the last thing i want is to buy a bmw out of warranty, that turns into a money pit..
just wondering what other cars you guys would recommend?
i will not b using the car as a daily. its a FUN weekend car.
it has to be manual. preferbly 6cylinder or higher, ideally turbo, but nothing set in stone.
i was thinking of maybeb a 370z? or what do you guys think about jumping to an EVO X ??
ps; we dont get vettes in australia, otherwise i would love one lol!

My father has a 335xi sedan, and had a 328i coupe before that. Make sure you get the x35 as well as the sport suspension or it will be boring. I test drove a 6MT 328xi sedan before buying my car and that thing was downright slow. The heated steering wheel was cool though
I was lucky enough for my father to lend me his car for the week while mine is getting some collision work done, and I have been driving it to work and back for 2 days now and I miss my car dearly. This thing (335xi sedan) is just boring.
They are pretty quick, though.
EDIT:
OP, get a s2000 and turbo it.

Don't do it, I sold my old Evo for a 335i and sold my 335i for another Evo. German cars are nice to drive, but expensive to fix when **** breaks. Luckily mines was under CPO warranty and I got mostly everything cover (except LED tail lights).
sold my evo for s2000... now trying to sell my s2000 for something with more torque. lame. missing the evo. was looking at a 135i as well but it appears to have probs and expensive to fix.
I had a 135i for a short time and went back to an Evo. My advice to you is not to worry about what everyone else thinks. Since in particular your car is already sold, you need to just drive many different possibilities and see what YOU like. Best of luck to you.
From a former owner..... if it has the N54 motor..... do not buy it. Dont get me wrong, they are alot of fun, really smooth and comfortable power curve, has the "BMW" awe factor, but it is the most problematic motor. I believe car and driver rated the 35 series BMW's the #1 vehicle never to buy out of warranty. I have now just begun to play with my evo since i am a new owner within the last 2 months and can already tell this car is alot more fun then the BMW. If you are looking for a luxury car feel that can put power down with some mod help, and dont mind paying out the *** for replacement parts when needed (and they will be needed, especially if you get it with the iDrive)...then BMW is a good choice.
