Broken part behind steering column

Hi guys and gals, new to the Evo scene so please excuse my lack of knowledge. Just picked up an 03 Evo 8 and was removing the turbo timer and fixing sketchy wiring and I noticed this broken part.. what is it and what does it do? Thank you very much.

Oh wow same thing happened to me. I had taken off the steering cover several times and it pushed against that spring thing and broke it the same way in the picture. You will need that cover with the spring inside. When turning the key the spring lever inside will push against the contactors within the key hole which will send voltage to the correct places to start your car. That spring and cover is what makes your key click every turn.

I used a strong tape to hold it in place. In terms of replacing it, I am not sure.

Thank you so much for the quick replies! Got it all taped up and tried the key, it clicks as stated, but is kind of hard to push in to move the key to lock to remove it not sure if the two issues were/are related.

You're missing the spring that sits on that ***** looking thing lol. If you don't have the spring just find a random. One and cut it down to size. Make sure not to apply to much pressure on the spring and cap otherwise it will be hard to turn your key

Its part of the key detection switch, and it is not sold separately. You need to get a new lock housing to get the part... or salvage one from a junk yard of course. The part number listed above is not it.

So just cut the spring to the length of the little ***** thing? Or longer so there is some tension? Thanks again for all the help.

That will not work. The spring needs to be decompressed. There needs to be a bounce. The spring in the image is already compressed

I did not see your reply until I had already went with one of those springs, I did open it up a bit so it had a little bounce and all seems well. I did find another spring in my tool box that wasn't compressed so if I have any issues I know what to do. Thanks again for all the help.
