Evo Rolling Coal
Evo Rolling Coal
Hey EvoM, I had gotten my 2004 evo 8 tuned back in September of 2015 and have been loving it. Recently I have been noticing quite a bit of black smoke in the rear view when I do full throttle pulls. The car even throws a ton of sooty smoke when I use 2 step. I don't believe it is tune related because the car never used to do this then it was freshly tuned. I have not noticed any loss of power my boost stays consistent at around 26lbs and my afrs seem to stay right in the 11-11.5 range which to my knowledge is normal. nothing feels different other than my car throwing smoke similar to a cummins 😂😂 my thinking would be a boost leak or a pre-turbo exhaust leak?? but wouldn't these make my afrs drop?? I am very confused hahah any input on how I should diagnose this problem would be helpful.
Thank you, Brian
Thank you, Brian
generally black smoke is oil burning, white smoke is coolant. Could be your turbo leaking oil, could be the engine burning it. Or it could be something else, but i would cross either of those things off the list if you can.
One day I blew the intake hose off of the throttle body. Having no tools, I drove the two miles to home. Other than barely running, the result of the drive was a black rear bumper. So, check for a boost leak.
Black smoke is fuel, blue smoke is oil.
Check your fuel trims with a basic scan tool, if they are +, there is a vacuum/boost leak somewhere. If the car is on ecu boost, it will make the required boost regardless of leaks, it will put a heckof a strain on the turbo tho.
Anyway, if you wanna make sure its not oil. Do a compression test. Yes pre turbo leaks will cause lean afr's. You most likely have a small boost leak.
