Purchasing a spare turbo

I jut got a clutch installed in my car and the tuning shop told me my turbo has excessive shaft play. I'm not in the state my car is currently so I cannot assess it myself. I am considering buying a spare usable turbo to swap in until I get mine rebuilt. Also am considering buyers my a non functioning one to rebuild depending on how bad my current one is when I get to my car. I'm driving from North Dakota to Oregon to pick it up and was hoping I could find one on the way. My question to u guys is how much would a functioning used turbo usually go for and how much for one that needs rebuilt? Some kid on a Facebook Evo page asked me to make an offer on his turbo that has 100k miles on it and he is saying it needs no rebuild and was pushing 400hp, I don't believe home for a second. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

How's the 71HTA treated you? I've been looking into this for my 9 but wasn't to sure if it was worth it.

It has held up great for me. I made 450/400 with it on E85 with the stock block, head, cams, etc, just bolt-ons. Spools fast, hits hard, and makes power all the way to redline.

I will most likely just buy one that needs rebuilt and upgrade it so I can just drop it in. If I upgrade the turbo and put it in the computer should just run at the same boost levels as my current setup right? The closest tuner wit a dyno to me is 8 hours away

If you install a turbo bigger than what you were previously running then you'll need a retune. For example 20psi on a stock turbo is different than 20psi on a 35r. Only way to not get a retune is to get the same turbo you had before

How's the top end and taper compare to the 9 turbo?

Mine does not taper much at all at 26psi on 93. It holds steady and makes power all the way to 8000. I love this turbo!

Mine doesn't taper within the OEM rev range. I make power all the way to 7500 on the stock cams.
