Noise in engine bay near intake manifold, sounds like a ball bearing rattling>

These are always fun threads aren't they? I think this will be fun to diagnosis and lets also hope it is not a critical issue. So lets start with the details.

Issue: Car at about 2800-4000 RPMS makes a fast ticking noise only under load, doesn't matter if you're at 100% WOT or 2%, there has to be load. I do not think it is rod knock because it is not a load rocking noise, it is a fast ticking noise, almost like an injector noise. The noise may also be heard above 4000 RPMS, but I can't hear it because the cars noise and wind noise reduce the ability to hear the noise.

Any idea's? I do not have anyone right now with me to hear, and I have already tried increasing the RPMS at idle to try to hear the noise, via, slowly increasing throttle by hand in the engine bay, and also by press the decelerator in the car. To no avail can I replicate the noise..

Thank you as always for your time, and I will always post my findings so this thread can be used in the future!

I have precision, but I can hear this noise at about 2800-3000 RPMS to about 4000-4200 RPMS-ish. It really could be a few things. I will look into it more tomorrow. I worked hard to find it today, but with daylight running out I was forced to quit. Car pulls hard, still, I do get a misfire though, I am sure its the plugs, I will look into getting some new ones tomorrow BR7ES.

You could also try the BPR7ES.

From what I read the BR will cause a misfire and the BPR won't if gapped right

I just installed BR7ES today, gapped to .020 - the noise is still there. I do have a misfire at low RPMS WOT..

I don't think it's lifters making the noise, because I should be able to replicate it during idle, and i cannot.

Update!

Okay, the noise seems to be coming neat the intake manifold. The noise is a like a ball bearing being rattled around in the intake manifold. has anyone ever heard this noise before, its like a check ball that is going crazy, i can now replicate the noise at idle but I have to give it throttle and let off to get the noise to come. When driving as soon as you hit 2800 RPMS till about 4000 RPMS you can hear it.

I know you said intake manifold but it's not the flapper in the throttle body is it I was just watching a video about the 2 set screws backing them selves out in it just a thought by the intake manifold I wouldn't be sure is the stock heat shield still on it maybe it's loose

My heat shields are off :\ - only happenings with a small amount to full amount of throttle, no real idle only unless I rev the car up and down quick, but never above 4K.

I would pull the upper IC pipe at the TB and make sure the set screws aren't loose I was just talking to a guy that had a weird rattle and that was it while I was out at a running shop if it was an internal thing I would think it would do it threw out the hole rpm band

I will look into that shortly today. The noise must resonate at 2800-4200 RPMS, very strange, like I said it sounds like a little marble that is going crazy in the intake manifold. If it is a set screw that would be great!

Hmmm dumb question have you inspected the turbo for shaft play just a thought thinking about in that area being its just below the intake manifold

I sure did just two days ago. It is in spec and has no play. I narrowed the noise down to around the water pump area, possibly the intake manifold. when driving this noise can be heard from 2800- 3800 RPMS - in that range. If you idle the car and give it the RPMS while you're checking for the noise you have to rev it up and back down quickly. I took a stethoscope today and the noise could be heard while placed on the water pump. This doesn't mean the pump is bad necessarily, but it is coming from around that area, It works better with load clearly, since the noise which is a fast ticking/ball bearing rattle can be heard while driving.

Um maybe check your timing belt tensioners just to make sure there not loosening up and somethings not hitting the timing belt cover
