Dead clutch spot

So I was driving today and all of the sudden I went to press in the clutch and it felt different. The pedal has a dead spot up top. It's about an inch of play where it moves freely. After that spot you can feel it going in. Shifts fine and all but never used to do this. Also it creeks and squeals as its being pressed. Any ideas?

edit - im sitting at a gas station right now and noticed that when I let go of the pedal and it's coming up it gets stuck right before the dead stop right before it reaches the top...I have to pull it that extra inch with my foot and sometimes it fully comes back into place without getting stuck.

Have you had any clutch work done lately?

Possible air in system or slave cylinder going bad. Try bleeding the system

Look under the dash at the rod coming thru the firewall...see if its wet, likely is, causing the squeak and isn't rebounding-- sounds like could be clutch master cylinder--also check fluid level in Brake m/C they share the reservoir.

I changed the clutch myself about a year ago...reservoir is full...I kept driving it yesterday and it went back to normal...I thought about clutch master cylinder...how does the mechanism actually work? What pushes the pedal back? The spring or the pressure in the cylinder pushing the rod back?

What pushes the pedal up is the pressure plate. Pressure plate pulls on TOB. TOB pulls on throw out arm, throw out arm presses on slave cylinder, slave cylinder pushes hydraulic fluid into master cylinder, master cylinder pushes pedal up.
