EVO clutch burned out at 6000 miles?
putting in an aftermarket clutch will void the rest of your drivetrain warranty.... at least, this is what the dealer and regional managers explained to me, while my transmission was being rebuilt. Im not saying they are correct.... but they damn sure believed what they were saying.

Man, this is crazy. I was reading on some Honda/Integra forums and someone was complaining that there clutch went at 100k. I realize an Evo isn't a FWD econobox, but I'm amazed at the difference. Is an AWD drivetrain so weak it will break if the clutch doesn't take up the slack?
The stock clutch will last depending primarily on how you LAUNCH/SLIP it from a stand still. I have 18,000 miles, intake, safcII,HKS 272's, mbc@21 psi, fuel pump, full 02 eliminator 3" turboback exhaust along with a few other litlle tricks puting down 330 to the wheels. I get on this car hard everyday and my clutch is still not slipping. The biggest clutch problem on ANY AWD DSM is all in the launch, u launch it or slip with just slight mods in the 275+whp range and ur going to fry it real quick guys. The trick to a lasting stock clutch is if u r at 300whp or more, dont dump it and expect to not smell it burning. These clutches will hold up just fine for what Mitsu intended a STOCK 275 whp to hold up. Now for us HP freaks making over 330 to the wheels it all comes down to our responsibility and driving style. My car is a prime example of if u treat it right it will last u longer. Now dont get me wrong if u break over 340whp u will end up slipping without a doubt.......so consider it guys, just figured i would share my situation, and like I said I drive my car HARD everyday and rack up 385 miles a week, this is my daily driver. Good luck all u guys on the stock setup, it really is not all that bad, trust me........

does not account for the additional case conditions. At least address some of the minor issues and avoid warranty or customer compliants. The EVO8 is the key to lure customer in and they need to realize that. anyway how's the 272/272? Any stalling problems???
When My EVO was stock and I launched it would still smell. I have had many sport cars including a 9 second Honda civic with 600+hp and have gone through my share of clutches and matbee it is just my evo but the clutch has never been right from the 1st day I took it home. Now I use a HKS GD max twin disc.(problem solved....... good luck
It's all in the driving style and the lack of appreciation in this country for the fact the Evo is based on a rally car and not a drag vehicle, i can understand why the US didn't get the car until last year as you don't hear of these complaints enywhere else. Indeed even the motoring press understand the downside to launching a awd car not on a loose surface.
As someone on here said before it can only take one launch to make the clutch inoperable and trying to liken the power and traction of the evo to any other fwd or rwd car is like comparing apples to oranges.

Well, I agree that Mitsu could have used something a little stronger, but like I said this clutch was intended to handle STOCK to mildly modified HP levels. And that, it does and also like someone else pointed out an AWD car was not really built to drag race, its mostly for handling performance. You are putting way too much stress on the clutch expecting it to transfer power thru a transfer case and four axles Dude
on a hard launch.. The 272 combo is perfect and very streetable with no stalling what so ever. If u r an old V8 man like myself, the light rumble of the cams is music to the ears of those who know what it is.. I once in a while will get some knuckle head asking me "Why is that brand new car having an idle problem or do u have a miss?"
The top end of the 272's is monstrous and ready to handle a bigger turbo, I've used these on all my DSMs and they work great, so I went with them again, the 264's are good for a mildly modified Evo, but eventually u will really need to upgrade anyway, so why wait put them in? I've got 15k miles on all my mods and the cams r my favorite........Good luck all

i will have to agree with all on this post, many good points, mitsubishi should definetly address the issues about the clutch if the ratio of cars sold in the us to complaints is so high.
personally i have 12,000 miles on my stock clutch with an intake and turbo back exhaust, and an e-manage, no problems as of yet! i am quite kind to my car off the start, i've only reallly launched it with a clutch smell like 5 times.
i like to get through the lag at a normal pace, then when the turbo is ready, i stomp it to the floor and take off!, this is probably the most fun you can have with this car while doing the least damage. i also rarely do the above mentioned, i am a pretty smooth level headed driver..............till someone cuts me off or rides my ***, then its...see ya later............

I don't know this for sure or not but I imagine that it just seems that such a high number of people are having clutch problems because the ones who are having problems are starting a new post about it everyday it seems... A huge number of people are still on their stock clutch so I don't really think it's Mitsu's fault.
Im just waiting for everyone to upgrade to these amazing clutches and start going through trannies. The more things change, the more they stay the same, these threads just make me think back to the Talon digest in the 94-96 days, same ****, different car...
I have 13,500 on mine, but I have never had the pleasure of going into the high revs on launch.
Same thing budlong said earlier......the service manager told me that putting in an aftermarket clutch would probably void the warranty on other parts of the drivetrain. Think about it.....a weak clutch reduces the potential stress on the rest of the drivetrain that THEY would have to pay for under warranty. Also, THEY are the ones who make the money replacing stock clutches. Either way THEY got you......
