2003-2006 Evo engine build question

Im looking to pic up a 2003-2006 Evo in the upcoming month or two I was wondering where you guys are getting parts for the older Evos. Im planning on doing a complete engine build/turbo to get right around 5-600 WHP.

I had a 2006 Evo a while back (sold it in 2013 sadly) but that's when I lived in Chicago and AMS was the premier Evo builder at that time. They built that Evo up to about 450 at the wheels.

When you look at their website now, it seems all they are interested in is the higher end cars and Evo X....even that has fallen to the wayside. Kinda sad.

I see they still have a crate engine available for $15,000-18,000, but nothing else is really listed.

So who are you guys using for major engine and turbo builds? Is there any other reliable company out there who is consistently making good parts for the Evo 8/9? I don't want to end up picking up a used Evo and then having parts available to me.

BTW, I'm located VA Beach.

Thanks for the help.

There's plenty of crate engines available. Buschur racing, AMS, MAPerformance. You can buy stroker engines as well. It all depends on what kind of performance you are looking for really. I like MAPerformance's offerings quite a bit, but I would give each a call and talk about your goals/needs and see which company you like best.

They all are great engine builders for sure.

IMO, $15k-$18k is just massive, unless you are doing ludicrous power, in which case you will need to be building your transmission, and transfer case.
The MAPerformance package is much, much more affordable. Great customer support as well.

shops chase the money l. As the evo 8/9 becomes more rare (less and less every day), they target newer production car owners as a clients. I wouldn't call the gtr "higher end" than the evo. I would just call it newer and more are in production therefore giving them a wider customer base which is why they're still very much engaged with the evo x. It's like anything else, not just cars.

Don't forget about English Racing! They make some mean motors. If I were to do it over again, I'd be looking at a 2.1 or 2.2 liter set up (still might if the 2.0 let's go at some point).

Buschur, Boostin, Englishracing, Stm, Four shops i would go with. any thing from a 2l to a 2.4l
If you want a stock turbo get an Fp red or black. If want ff go with a 6262 or some turbo like that

If you're going for big power, I would have to agree with the others and definitely go with a stroker.

Thanks for the replies guys. Im definitley not trying to make massive power, but I would like to be in the 5-600 range. The old Evo we had was not a stroker, but an AMS built stock block with a bigger turbo and made roughly 450. It was beautiful.....but I think I want to go different and more aggressive since it wont be my daily like it was back then for my brother.

Beautiful car.

The stroker will be overall a lot more drivable at 5-600 vs. a 2.0, as it will be capable of providing much improved spool over a standard 2.0.

Good to know. Thanks for the info. It sounds like stroker is the way to go if Im going to do a complete re-build anyway.

Are you looking for a roller, or a complete car?

I would prefer something that runs and is in descent shape. I'm not going to have the ability to mod it right away so I will drive it as is for a while. It won't be my daily driver as I already have one, but I'll drive it a few times a week for fun.

Doesn't have to be perfect...but I would like something that was taken care of. It can be modded as long as the mods were done right and aren't affecting the car negatively. I.e.- not tuned properly, cheap parts, etc.
