Evo 4 very smokey all the time!

Hey guys and girls. my evo 4 with 6 engine seems very very smokey all the time. not so bad on idle but very very bad on take off and just general running of the car. got compression tests done and its all good 180-165 psi am getting so everything seems ok? changed turbo as though it was turbo but still doing the same thing. it runs great holds power fine etc. just smokey and spits oil out the exhaust. got the turbo checked prier to install and got told it was a good turbo. and when taking the oil cap off oil spits out and it seems to be blowing at me? loke there's loads of pressure inside the engine? any ideas much appreciated

If you're car is running, oil will spit at you when you take the cap off because oil is squirting in the head to lubricate everything.

What color is your smoke? And just FYI a drop from 180 to 165 is a significant drop. Could by blow by from the rings being worn. How many miles are on the car?

Its a blue colour. been told that 165 is fine? 14psi plus or negative is suppose to be acceptable? number 1 is 165
number 2 is 170
number 3 is 180
number 4 is 180

Piston ring blow by.

Re do compression test and add 2 spoons of oil and see if number rises, if it does more then likely its piston ring sealing issue.

You can verify by doing leak down test and seeing were the air is going, crank case, coolant, valves etc etc.

I believe all engines have some blow by which causes oil to spit out of cap.

Ok cheers all try that tomorrow night then and see if it holds pressure with few tea spoons of oil in it
if it holds fine and pressure is the same what does that meen? and if it doesn't hold and it rises up meens the rings have gone?

If compression rises in the low cylinder its usually indicating piston rings that aren't fully sealing any more.

The oil acts as a extra ''seal''

Possible, but much less likely than the rings being done. And there would me much more severe symptoms if there was a damaged ringland.

Leakdown test is in order.

I always thought stem seals would cause a leak down and low compression but someone on here quoted on me that it will not.

Usually valve stem seals will cause smoke upon decel and or start up from them leaking oil into chamber.

A leak down test will point you in the right direction.

No it won't because leakdown tests , like compression tests often give normal numbers when the pistons are in fact broken.

you might also want to check your PCV. Shake it and hear if it moves up and down. If it doesn't its stuck and should be cleaned or replaced.

It's like directly to the left of the oil cap. Just wanted to mention your engine bay is clean. On the 4-6 the part I circled on the right side uses a crappy hose that cracks over time and leaks oil. Seen it on a few 2nd gens at this point.
