HELP! in NJ Black Smoke
HELP! in NJ Black Smoke
Evolution 8 here.
Noticed the tailpipe was very black so started to get concerned then a guy in an STI pulled up next to me to say that I had black smoke coming out of the exhaust. I know this is an immediate attention issue and I am going to bring it to a dealer here in NJ to get checked out but I am not sure who to take it to. Reason beng is that these dealerships rarely work on Evos and I don't want to take it to just any dealer. So I wanted to ask any of you if you had positive experiences taking your car to any dealer in NJ to get something fixed?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You are running rich.. thats unburnt fuel. I assume you are stock .. most Evos esp. the US Evo run rich from the factory. The presence of copious black smoke in an otherwise stock car usually indicates a clogged air filter element...
check that.... just pull it out and inspect it.

Evos run extremely rich in the higher rpms. Chances are that you and the Sti were really getting on the throttle when he noticed the black smoke.
A better solution for you would be to get your ecu tuned. Leaning out the mixture up top stops a lot of the sooty rich exhaust smoke and yields you some hp.

Thanks for the feedback, Do you think being that at this point the car is still stock, I should let the dealer check it out or should I just change/inspect the air filter?

Cool come to our meet at UNO's in wayne on Wed next week.
Look it up in the Northeast Forums.
It's got a very high chance of just being totally normal, but there is the chance that something like your filter is dirty, or your cat has failed, etc etc... but it's about a 90% chance it's just the Evo's deathly pig rich a/f ratio
