COP - Replacement Coil

I have enjoyed many years from my current COP and the system has performed flawless up til now.

Due to an abuse that I caused, one of the coils has kicked the bucket!

I reached out to the manufacture - but they are 2 weeks out on new coils and I dont have the luxury of waiting that long.

As best I can research - the attached pictures(failed coil) are OEM Denso Ignition Coil 90919-02240 commonly for Toyota.

The only modification that needs done, is the weather seal needs removed, and the spring which contacts the plug needs stretched slightly. I would use the other 3 as references for this.

If someone can confirm this is the 02240 coil, I can get one in about 2-3 days.

Thank you in advance!!

Awesome - thank you!

I read through your write up, but I didnt see the Toyota part number. Just wanted to be sure.

Original manufacture of the COP wants $100 for one.. I got it for $45 shipped to my door.

How did the car act with the bad coil? Also where did you find it for $45 shipped? (:

Could be a knock-off...

I believe legit denso coils have the part listed on the side of the top of the coil.

Irregardless it is the same format/style.

I use the Toyota Yaris' Denso coils. My cop kit is homemade though. I just got 4 coils at the wreckers for twenty bucks.

Hey xRoguex... I am parting together my COP let up as well, and have the 40's... however, this is the first that I am hearing about the (1) the spring needing to be stretched and (2) the weather seal removed. I am getting the coil plate from SpoolinUp. Where did you find information on the 2 above procedures? From the reading I gathered on the forums, it was a simple plug and play. Thanks in advance for clearing things up.

I heard about extending the spring as well. I forget where but it does make sense. I asked Matt @ spoolinup about it and said it was not necessary though. He also said you can put the rubber insulators on the underside of the plate when installing but not necessary iirc.

I had a blatently misfire. Boost was nonexsistant and power was down by about 60%.

I also touched each of the coils while the car was idling. 3 of them I could touch pretty easily. The 4th was about.. 50-60 degs warmer and burned the **** out of my hand.

So just to double check - I unplugged that coil and the idle was identical.

I also used an IR Thermal viewer to look at the manifold.. The runners were averaging in the 280-300 deg range and that cylinder was holding steady at 160-170. Clearly it wasnt firing.

$35 shipped on this one. I paid more but needed it ASAP.

The weather seal at the top will not fit with my sparktech system - or at least it didn't come with them so I assumed they wouldn't fit.

In a nut shell - I'm just going to make the new coil coming - look like the one i pulled out.. ran great for 6 years!

I hate when people dont follow up with their threads.

New coil came in. Toyota part number as listed above. I did nothing to it but take the weather seal off the top, bolt it to my sparktech plate. Added a little dielectric grease to the coil. Dropped it on.. and took it out.

Runs like it did before i shorted the old coil out.

If more die, i'll continue to replace them with genuine Toyota coils.

Will the Denso - Part #: 673-1306 be a drop-in replacement for the Spoolin-up CoP Evo 4-8 trim? The spring and boot on one coil burnt out with some damage to the neck but not enough to not replace the coil and boot. I can get the boot and coil from Spoolin-up site but since I'm located out of the US it's going to cost me an arm and a leg to ship and was thinking I might as well get the whole coil. Please assist.

If they're the flat style coils pictured, then yes.

You'll need to pull the rubber boot off and take a pair of needle-nose pliers to extend the spring a bit, about 1/8 - 1/4 inches (about 5mm). If you pull the spring out just carefully put it back in place, though it takes a skinny object with a flat end like a pin punch removal tool and some force to re-seat it in the coil
