4g63 Vs. 4b11t reliability

Hey guys, I’m planning on getting an evo soon, either an 8 or an X. But the only thing that’s up in the air is I don’t know wether the 4g63 is more or less reliable compared to the 4b11t. Whichever I got would mostly be a daily driver nothing too crazy with mods. I’d just like to get opinions on which y’all think is more reliable, and what kind of common problems I’d face with each. Thanks in advance.

Hi, the 4G63(T) engine has been around for decades and for sure it is reliable. Of course if you plan to modify it be sure to consider also all supporting mods needed (if you just slam on the biggest available turbo and max out the boost you will blow it).

Both are good but for me I would go with 4g63. I like CT9A better than the X. But if you want more comfort and technology the X is the way to go. No lie sometime I do miss comfort at time but when it time to play she never disappoint. So it all depend of what you want. VIII is RAW power the X is more finesse that the best way for me to compare them. Both are reliable, all depend of the power you make

They're both very relaibale. Only issue with the 4b11/EvoX is the 2008's have a timing cahin that stretches and will need replaced. But its a one time thing, the updated chain doesn't stretch. Basically, pick which Evo you like better and go with it.

ct9a is getting old, there are parts I need to replace that I can't seem to find through any normal channels. The X being in production until 2015 means parts availability should in theory be good for a while.

Out of curiosity, what parts are those?

My door locks are making noise when I close them. Have not looked into it yet but now I should do it soon.

It really comes down to what you are looking to do.
If purely for modding and drag, I'd say go 4G63... Cheaper to mod than sleeving a 4b11. It also helps to have the turbo placed in the front rather the back.

If for daily driven, grocery/family type car, with light mods, then 4b11 all day for how fun and quick spooling the car is. Also, you can easily go the tephraxmod v3 with flex fuel capability route.
I have HEAVILY modded both, I still have my Evo 9 and sold the X..

Theres evo Xs everywhere.. a used Evo Ix might cost you more money but if you find one in good condition you have to take it.

i was looking at high mileage evos for some time since it was the only thing in my price point but ended up waiting and saving a little money, just to get a great deal down the line. in the meantime i bought a 98 eclipse, the first year they had the forged internals making it pretty much a fwd evo 3, and it's at 220k miles right now stock engine and turbo, once i saw that i pretty much stopped caring about mileage and made sure maintenance and sorting out weird noises and smells in the engine bay a priority on owning a car that i want to keep on the road.
tldr; my 4g63 has 220k miles on stock block and turbo, i'd get an x if you're a bigger guy and need space, reliability is directly impacted by maintenance
