Hm...possible 6spd conversion?
what the hell replace it with the stock 5 speed.. then just trade it in a few months to get an MR.. if its true of them comign here. then we all will well idk what we would think... ( i'd def be jealous )

I don't know about anyone else, but there's too much of a gap for me between 4th and 5th. Ideally, I'd want a shorter 4th, something between 4th and 5th for my new 5th and the existing 5th for my 6th.
The Evo "needs" lots of things and I'm not even halfway there yet.
Shifter Vid #1
I have got a lot of pms about the 6 speed and the shifter mechanism / play etc. I took a short vid ... hopefully if I do get access to the car again, I can take another one with the car driving this time

So it's not just a matter of plugging in a few extra things and suddenly being able to have a 6spd AYC/ACD system under a US Evo VIII....ie it is not a dead simple switch.

The 6speed tranny does not in any way need the active stuff, in fact from what I can tell it should be a direct bolt on to the transfer case with the viscous unit. The gear linkages and the reverse selector (seen in vid) are different and would be needed also.

Hm, the shifter looks to be really long-throw (more so than the 5 speed), and it does look kind of loose too. Actually, it reminds me a lot of the STi 6 speed. What's up with that?

Maybe Cruftydusty or one of the members with the jdm e8 gsr can lend more useful info..
This topic has come up many times and I've gotten into so many flame wars about it. I've owned both the 7 GSR and the 8 with the 6 speed gearbox.
The Evo 7 gearbox (W5M51) is good, but due to the ratios the car feels very weak at the top of 4th into 5th. While it's true that most tracks usually don't allow you enough room to use the top gear, people tend to forget that the ratios are stacked closer together. What this means is that you have options. It's not a sequential gearbox; you can skip gears! Wow, who would've thunk that?

Reliability-wise my car is still pretty much stock with >20K hard-driven miles on it. Yes, my car was affected by the recall, and it involved replacing a tiny pin in the gear selection lever and that's about it.
