Hm...possible 6spd conversion?

My tranny is having problems so Im sending it to dealer next weekend to get it fixed...anyway the mechanic said that if the tranny has a big problem, why not just switch to 6spd by just adding couple more hundred $? Warranty's gonna cover most of the cost...but if the car only has like one broken syncro ring, cost for conversion ain't exactly gonna be cheap...what would you guys do? hes a really well known mechanic among dealers (my dads a mechanic...he heard of the guy a lot)

p.s. my dad doesn't deal with tranny stuff...he deals with body dmg issues

Well, if it's just a "couple more hundred" and the gearing is basically the same with a higher 6th gear, I'd go for it. What is the source of this transmission? ? Just curious.

EDIT: grammar

A few problems:

Sourcing - You would either have to find a JDM or Euro 6 speed box with ACD, and no AYC *OR* an ACD/AYC gearbox and rear diff and ECU to control said functions. Depending on final drive, you may also need a front diff.
Electronics - You have to figure out how to make the ACD and AYC work with your existing engine management, which if you have a piggyback or replacement ECU, would be "interesting" to do. Ralliart does sell an AYC/ACD control box, IIRC, but do not know how you would go about sourcing one. Also, there is the problem of the instrument cluster and in car control of the active differential.
Clutch/flywheel - I do not know if you can re-use the stock clutch on this 6 speed, maybe a vendor can chime in here?

OR, I could be making life too complicated and you can simply bolt in the 6-box and have ACD nonfunctional. Anyone wanna find out before I get around to it?

Regards,
Joe

ok, lets take the 5 speed transmission, which has issues of strength, then, to fit a 6th gear into it, lets take all of said weak components and make them smaller to make room for this extra gear set. Sounds like a plan, I mean 6 > 5 right?

Well, that's easy enough to do, but then you have to figure a way to do Reverse, which may require new shift lever, reverse lockout, etc.

FWIW, I asked John Shephard about doing this and he said he wasn't interested in doing the R&D on it and basically thought I was nuts.

It's #4 on my list of things to do, stay tooned.

That wasnt an idea, it is what is done to make a 6 speed transverse box from the OE. I was pointing out the fact that almost every 6 speed transverse OE gearbox is inherently weaker and more prone to breaking than the 5 speed box that it was based on.

More sh it in the same size box = compromises

leave it the way it came. their will be a different gear ratio from the 5 speed to 6 speed.

would it be possible to buy the entire drivetrain in cluding tranny6spd with acd and all that stuff and just put it in the 03evo, would you have to get the small gas tank?

Didn't Shiv do an install of a 6spd in an Evo like 4 months ago? I thought he said after doing it that he wouldn't recommend it.

christ, doesnt anyone listen, we've already gone over the multitude of stuff you'd need to swap over, addressed the not so hot ratios, and made it fairly clear that the 6 speed box is weaker than the 5 speed. What in the world is there left to discuss, think about, or daydream over. I hate to say it, but this 6>5 crap is starting to sound like Spinal Tap.

"But it goes to 6..."

just a quick note, all the Evo 8s in here in the UK have the 6 speed box' so the conversion should be dead simple (he says)!!!
