Another crashed Evo
Driving my lovely 2003 Evo, leaving I-25 heading for Windsor Colorado, the driver's rear tire blew throwing us violently into the guard rail. Bouncing off of that a couple of times we hit the barrier on the other side of the road at about a 45. Neither my wife nor I were hurt. The tires were new, when installed there was a pull that wasn't present before. Flipping the driver's front to the rear fixed the pull. That is the tire that blew. That fact that we were thrown into the guard rail I attribute to the posi rear end.
Oh, the wing is fine, the rest totaled. I figured I'd be driving this car for many more years. It never leaked or used a drop of oil. Well, we walked away without a scratch. Dead at 142,000 miles.

Wow..good thing you guys walked away from this one. Sounded like a pretty violent crash. You took good care of her while she lived, any pics of before and after? got any plans for whats next? Sorry to hear this man..hearing about lots of totalled evos lately for some reason.

I've been working on cars since I was 10 years old. Took over right where my daddy left off when he died. But now I'm 75 and not really interested in rebuilding this mess. Also, I'm 400 miles from home. So, get some wheels tomorrow I hope and get out of here. That's about as far as my plans extend.
So, thanks to all for the best wishes. I know it could have been much worse.

I am glad to hear you and your wife are ok, and I hope insurance pays you what it's worth. Hopefully you can find another one if you decide to stick with the Evo!
By the way, what kind of tires did you have? Sounds like something was very wrong with that one!

Glad to hear you and the wife are ok as that’s the most important thing.
We don’t know each other personally but I know you’ve been active here for as long as I can remember and always been damn good to that car, read when you were gathering some OEM replacement parts while still available, and that you did a clutch or trans not too long ago IIRC.
Yes cars can be replaced but when you spend nearly 20yrs with a car it’s more than just a machine, you develop a bond you know every damn bolt, nut, and screw in the thing. Know the min something isn’t right, know exactly how it should act, it becomes a friend, and a part of you.
Really sorry to hear about the car being totaled out.

They were Continental snow tires purchased the end of February of last year. This was my travel car but due to Covid it had seen few miles until this trip. I previously had been running Bridgestone BlazzakWS70's and found they handled about the same as summer tires for street driving so why swap. I ran them year around. This time I decided to try Continentals. I've had tires that acted funny before but never had one failed me like this. In a split second we were against the railing on the opposite side of the road. On the way out of town we drove by the accident scene. We saw we'd created a large bow in the guard rail on the left and a deep guard rail divot on the right where we finally came to rest. It was impressive. My wife has a dime sized scab on her ankle and I don't have a scratch or even a sore muscle. One of the firemen sweeping the debris off the road said he had seen two other rally cars wrecked in similar fashion after blowing a rear tire. So, beware.
We came home in my mother's car, a 2003 Civic with 117 hp after buying four Douglas brand tires from Walmart (all they had in the correct size). I'd step on the accelerator and think I was on the brake because nothing was happening. Mother is nearly blind and hasn't driven for years so we rolled 22,000 miles on the odometer on the way back.

I feel your pain. My 2005 evo 8 that I have had for 15 years was rear ended and destroyed last week by some douchebag in a camaro. That car was going to be passed down to my son. Now I just hope the insurance doesn't lowball me. I enjoyed my time on this forum, and loved that car.
