My Evo's at about 7k and had a few common problems, such as paint chips behind the rear door (due to a misaligned striker plate), and a few that seem a little uncommon, like a fried wastegate solenoid. Luckily, the dealership I'm servicing through has been good about warranty stuff.

To those who don't like hearing about Evo problems here, I'd just mention that it definitely helped me get my paint chips filled under warranty to tell the dealer that a number of other owners experienced similar problems. I agree that maybe the site should have a section devoted to problems/warranty issues, but in the absence of that I've found "problem" posts to be a great service, since it helps me research other common issues with the car. Sure, some of the issues other drivers are experiencing might be...um...operator errors, but it doesn't do any good to berate them for it, or belittle those of us who have had real problems. I'm happy for those who are driving problem free, but they have to realize that not all of us have been so lucky. Doesn't make it any less of a car to have trouble, especially when it's covered by warranty. And, chances are more likely that warranty claims will be honored if you can show it's a common problem.

This car was built to be "beaten". If you drive it like your mom's Camry you are throwing your money away. I always laugh when I here someone suggests that the car is having problems b/c someone is "beating the hell out of it"....as if that isn't what it was designed for. Do you think the Corvette/STi/Mustang/350Z forum is full of owners suggesting that the solution to any of their problems is to drive the car in a more docile manner?

Hell yes! I could not agree more. This is sort of what I told the Mitsu service department last night, when I was telling them the stock clutch sucks.
Any way I have 2000mi and the only problem is........I CANT STOP GRINDING 2ND!

Would all future Evo owners please disregard this man's babbling... especially since he doesn't even own an Evo.

WTF?!? An Evo isn't meant to be beaten ... period. Yes, you can drive the wheels off it, but if you expect it to last (especially the clutch, and other trans components), then it needs to be driven CORRECTLY. This is not a RWD muscle car that has the luxury of spinning tires all day long. The Evo is an AWD car with huge amounts of grip and off-the-showroom it is designed to have the clutch give out before the rest of the trans ... read: beat on it and you will most likely be replacing your clutch (which is more or less not warrantied with very few exceptions) under 5000 miles.

As far as grinding 2nd goes ... if your car does it even after the trans is warmed up, then have your dealer look at it. My 1-2 shift is very notchy if the tranny isn't warmed up yet (10-15 minutes) and if I try to do a fast 1-2 when it's cold it will grind a little. It's a known issue, not many Evos seem to have a good 1-2 shift.

Thanks for the lesson. I don't beat the hell out of my car, and I'm not saying that you should try to kill the thing, but the car was designed to drive fast and hard. on occation I'll race people on the street. If I think it's safe. If the freeway is empty I'll take it up to maybe 120mph, not for a long periods of time. Just long enough to get the adrenaline pumping. Yet on fast accelerations no matter how much I pay attention I grind in to second. I'm sure it's got to be me.
Also, I just read an artical in Sport Compact Car where they replaced the clutch because it is not strong enough the handle the power in the Evo. They did a few mods in the car, but not many. They ended up replacing it whith a Exedy twin disc clutch which solved all their problems. Though I'm sure you are much smarter then the profesional drivers of SCC. So if you have any other advice please feel free to let me know.

You see, that wasn't so hard, was it? Because even though you're still trying to disagree with me, you're actually saying the same thing ... yes, the car was designed to drive very fast and hard ... just as I said, but in my book that does not equate to being "beaten". When someone starts throwing around phrases like "This car was built to be 'beaten,'" then ppl with less foresight than you obviously posess, will take it to mean that the Evo must be bulletproof and, heck, we can dump the clutch all day long and not worry about a thing.

Huh?!? Perhaps you should re-read my reply ... if it keeps grinding, take it to your dealer ... the car does have a warranty (unless you've somehow managed to void it).

No kidding? Perhaps they did it because the Evo "is an AWD car with huge amounts of grip and off-the-showroom it is designed to have the clutch give out before the rest of the trans" ... nah, had to be some other reason. Also, before you jump on the upgraded clutch bandwagon ... remember that SCC has a much larger budget than you or I do, and if they end up blowing up the transfer case, they'll just shrug, chalk it up to experience and either replace it or upgrade it (and they'll even write another cool article about it that you can read ). And for all those that have purchased upgraded clutches ... no need to get on my case ... I will be upgrading mine as well as soon as it gives out, but I will be doing it with the understanding that not only will my drivetrain warranty be void, I also run the risk of destroying drivetrain components if I'm too heavy-handed, err .. footed with it.

Greetings All,

I'm now on my second power steering pump and my passenger fuel pump has gone south, otherwise, the car is perfect... Anyone else with power steering failures?

Cheers,

OS

I have a problem when i'm in third gear.

Feels like it's not going fast enough on third and the turbo don't spool up as quickly.

It's just the third gear. It almost feels like the turbo takes a break between 2nd and 4th.

I'm recently finding out that this car doesn't feel fast enough. I know its fast, but is it me, or is the world just passing by very slowly when I drive this car fast...

ok, i'm done *****ing for today.

hey plokivos sup... i'm not too sure bout ur third gear problem but bout the car not feeling fast enough thats just u getting used to it... it's time for a performance upgrade.... here's how you can find out: drive a minivan for a week or the wives suv then get back in the evo... and you'll feel the difference...

i'm starting to notice that my car kinda hesitates before accelerating, and it's not the turbo lag... it feels like when the car is cold how it studders a little bit, or when ur fuel line is kinda clogged it hesitates then pow takes off.... and it's not missfire either, which btw is getting really bad anyway that's enough for now....
