I have a 2006 Mitsubishi Evolution making a grinding noise from the front, but only when starting from a stop and releasing the clutch in forward gears. It does not make the noise in reverse.

I removed the front wheels and the axle boots are not torn. When I experiment with different clutch release speeds, the noise seems to change, and it feels like the rear driveshaft clinks around.

Any ideas what could be causing this?
