Evolution VIII, GDI engine instead of 4G63?

Has anyone heard a rumor that the new Evolution VIII will be sporting Mitsubishi's new Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine? I just happened upon a site that made the speculation. I'm not stating that I have any real knowledge about the subject, but I don't really remember ever seeing the question of a totally new engine being raised before. Something to contemplate...

Not in the states since our gas is high in sulphur. Sulfur clogs GD injectors.

They're also be really difficult to service being (most likely) such a small run of cars and the only GDI engines in the US. I doubt many mechanics have hands on experience with them at all.

Well, mechanics will have more trouble working on RX-8's rotary engines as they will with GDI. As long as it's got a piston, most people will be able to fix it. But That whole rotary thing...dealer is about to open a swiss bank account cos people will be rolling in with a bag full of money.

From what I have read on the subject the GDI engine has lower emissions, so I was thinking that it would almost be the perfect time for to introduce the engine to meet laws. Just a thought, since it is inevitable that this technology will be employed in the U.S. someday. Anyone know of a site that has a good technical breakdown on GDI technology?

How its done.

Go here to see how GDI works. Its funny how Nissan's SR20DET, RB26DETT, and Toyota's 3S-GTE and 2JZ-GTE have fallen by the wayside due to Japanese emissions, yet Mitsubishi is still able to campaign the 4G63T after ten years. I wonder if they'll have to introduce GDI to keep the motor in rotation.

Thanks for the good info GPTourer. That provided some insight, but there was no talk about the possibilities of using it on a turbocharged engine. It also appears that OBD-III would probably have to be used on this type of engine due to the exact requirements in using a dual combustion modes. It would be interesting to see how this would affect tuning capabilities. But in reference to turbocharging these engines, it would seem that it would be possible to run a low compression ratio and higher boost compared to a standard engine with a low compression ratio. Again, thanks for the good word.

GDI Turbo

I think the models you mean are:

The Pajero iO Turbo with 160PS (4G93GDI+T&IC)

The Lancer Cedia Wagon T-Touring with 165PS (4G93GDI +T&IC)

The Dion F-Turbo with 165PS (4G93GDI +T&IC)

I thought the new Pajero Evo uses the 4g94T w/ GDI.

The 4g93 GDI was used in the regular lancer; as far as I know, the 4g93T never sported GDI.

The gen 1 4g93T pumps out 195 HP and gen 2 rips out 205 HP. Still not bad for a 1.8L . . .

Beg to differ

There IS a turbo version of the 4G93 GDI in four models.

Here's the link to one of them:

Yer wrong

There's a difference between generic Fuel Injection and Gasoline Direct Injection.
