Running a Evo 8
Running a Evo 8
For those who are going to buy the Evo 8 I hope you guys do know that running a Evo will be really expensive. I have a friend who has a Evo VII with 8k miles on it and already changed all four tires! Not mentioning a new clutch also. From reading the threads from MLR all owners say it is dam expensive to own one and running it. That is why most recommend you use it as a weekend car and have another one for everyday use. If not then prepare to have plenty of cash around because you will need it!

Normal driving
If you drop clutch and race from every light, then yeah.
You'll probably also kill your brakes real quick...
I think the main cost we'll all have to deal with is fuel consumption, especially with that tiny tank

I find that really hard to believe Derek888, I know you're just the messenger so I'm not shooting you down. It's just that I have friends that drive their Evolutions and they range from EVO III's all that way up to the VII and they drive them every day. They perform well and the only time they take them into the shop is for regular tune ups. None of them have ever complained of having to change tires or a clutch because of extra-ordinary wear, and most of these guys street race on Friday nights so what you are hearing might be a special case.
I don't think it's a special case considering the multiple posts on lancerregister from current and previous Evo owners. It is known that the stock Evo clutch was always weak (at least in the VII) but I heard the VIII will probably be improved. Also, tire wear is a given when you have awd and accelerate and drive hard. Maintenence on the Evo may also be higher than other cars because of the ayc/acd system. Also, it is a Mitsubishi...made in Japan or not, there will be some problems and poor dealer service issues. These are just things you have to be willing to accept. That is why I'm not dead set on the Evo UNLESS it comes with fairly impressive specs.
Street race and daily driving doesnt count for much.
If you drive it on the track, the clutch and tires wear out really quickly. On a car like the Evo, you dont want to get crap tires and high end performance tires are both expensive and have short thread life. $800 for a set of 4 tires is pretty common.
It also sucks gas a lot and so you have to use the highest octane and fill it often.
If you get an Evo, i certainly recommend it as a weekend car and not a daily driver, especially in the US. The suspension is very stiff, for the earlier Evos at least, and on crappy US roads, it isnt really comfortable.
