Exclamation Be aware when locking your car

I was watching a car show from germany that comes on the local college station. They were demonstrating how thieves are getting into cars to steal things in europe. They wait in parking lots for people to lock their cars with their key fobs, that aren't really paying attention. When the person goes to lock their car they key up one of those long range walkie talkies. The signal from the walkie talkie over powers the signal from the key fob and the car never gets locked. I thought it was BS at first but, they did it to everything from a citroen to a brand new 911. The lights never blink and the horn never sounds so if you are paying attention you would notice but atleast five people just walked away on the show. I'm assuming the radios have to be on a certain bandwidth but, I thought it would be good info to pass on.

I don't have power door locks. So no remote to worry about.

Who's laughing now, all those who criticised me for not buying power equipment?

I wonder if there is a way to lock the car without having the parking lights flash? I used to be able to change it on my Nissan by holding down both buttons at the same time for 3 seconds...

The stock remote can be set a few different ways. I have mine set so that it's silent if you lock it, but you can push it again to get a horn beep to verify that it's locked. I always beep twice, and even sometimes beep it again as I'm walking away, since my short term memory is very unreliable! Also it's great fun when you're in Memo's parking lot underground and everyone's beeping beeping beeping.... ha!

How do you adjust this? I don't recall anything like that in the manual? Currently, I appreciate the fact that my car honks its horn when I lock it. However, my last aftermarket alarm gave me the option to lock silently (like if I was sneaking back home after partying all nite and didn't want to alert the 'rents)

a way to lock the doors without the honk, is hit the 'lock' button before you shut the door, the lights will flash, the doors will lock but it will not honk

read the manual.. but i think it's hold unlock for 3-10 seconds, let go and hit lock once, the car will chirp 1, 2 or 3 times to tell you what mode you are in, do it again to cycle through the modes

i can't remember what mode is what, but it shouldn't take long to figure out

one of them is the default (lights, horn on first press)
the other is silent and no lights
the last is lights on the first press, horn on second press when all the doos are properly locked

Why not just press the lock button on the armrest as you get out? Seems easier than using the remote to me...

Interesting info though. But it seems strange that anyone who locks their car with the remote wouldn't notice there was no beep and press it again.

If you are in the default mode, you can press the lock button on the fob and lock the doors without the beep if one of the doors is still open. So when you are getting out, do it before you shut the door.

I know a better way to do it with a programmable tv remote. I have to get a hold of the persons keys for a min or two.,
