MPG and Modding
Hey, I was thinking about getting a motorcycle in the fall, but I also want to mod my evo sommore, sooooo the question is: What affect does modding have on my gas efficiency (mpg)? Intake is supposed to give me better mileage, but what about the other mods, such as exhaust, cams, intercooler, ecu, etc? Thanks in advance!
First, you shoule know I'm not claiming to be an expert on this stuff, but have read up on the evo and modding in general a lot lately. With that said, yes, intake will free up airflow into the engine and increase HP and MPG. Same with exhaust. If you replace intercooler pipes, your probably adding pipes that allow better airflow, so that's good too, but as far as I know, the intercooler itself might not affect mileage as much as it allows you to run your car harder, and stay cooler. I don't know that cooler engines run more efficient though... anyone else?
Yea the IC should really not affect MPG, besides you are probably only going to notice the benefits of a big IC at WOT where MPG is in the dirt. The most signifcant change to my MPG has been the A/F adjustment from the custom Dynoflash. I am sure the Vishnu/Works/EMS also do much better in MPG. That being said, I just filled up my tank today; it took 12.9 gallons and went 314 miles either on two lane roads blasting by people to pass, or cruising around 90 on the Interstates. I was pleased!
Intake/exhaust/fuel management will help your MPG. But there's a caveat here: They help your MPG when you're not flooring it. And if you just put them on, chances are, you'll want to hit WOT some. But if you're talking about nice, easy driving, yeah, they help.

Cams, larger turbo, and stroker kits usually cuase worse miles per gallon, but intake/exhuast/ custom A/F always eqaute to better miles, but only when you're driving like a granny

my Evo is bone stock, but let me chime in on another aspect of your post...
buy a sportbike. do not bother dicking with the Evo. I bought a nice car that is plenty stock-- of course you can tweak it for more, but you have to spend a WHOLE LOT of money to beat a sportbike's performance and even then you never surpass the seat-of-the-pants feeling of being right there in the elements, right on the road, and on top of a <400lb, >100-170HP deathmachine.
I'd much rather have a $7,000-11,000 sportbike and a stock Evo rather than a faster, but unreliable high maintenance Evo alone. of course I have a lot of bikes and it's my life, whereas the Evo is just a car.
but I don't mod the engine on my sportbike either, though. slip-on muffler, k&n air filter, piggyback fuel computer (cos it's FI instead of carbureted-- on carbed bikes you just rejet).
People unaccustomed to a fast car toiling in their minivans everyday are a little surprised by the speed and handling of a stock Evo, but they can grasp the concept and understand it. You seriously cannot fathom the performance of a modern sportbike without experiencing it. It's faster than fast.
edit: and, I get 42mpg average on my sportbike. nothing but fast road and I still get at least 30.

42 mpg!! That's madness. The only thing I have against getting a bike is killer insurance!!!!! Plus my budget is very low, say about 3-4K. Probably looking for a used one, what do you recommend for a 1st timer?
