I agree with Event-Horizon. When you add 4 qts. the dip stick shows that it's full. But after you run the engine for a bit and the oil cooler fills up, the dip stick will show a low reading.

In contrast to some of what has been said here. I have tracked my car several days with ZERO oil consumption. Then one weekend I took a relaxing cruise to the lake and burned off a quart of oil.

Thanks for the all replies.

I checked this morning after letting the engine cool down for approx 10 hours. The reading was close to the maximum level but still b/w the low and max points on the dip stick. This is after I added 2 quarts of oil last night. So there's no doubt it burnt thru 2 quarts. I'm going to drive it for a few hundred miles this week and see what happens. I'm still going to let the dealer know when I bring it in for service next week. At least they can have this thing documented if sth happens.

I don't mind adding a quart every 1000 miles as long as that is normal...seems a bit excessive to me. This is my first turbo motor so I wasn't sure wtf was going on.

I'll look into 10W-30 as well.

thanks

Be sure the car is absolutely, positively level when you check the oil. I have found that a slight dip in the driveway makes it read low. Ditto what others said about putting in 4.8 quarts. It's possible you started 1 quart low & actually only used 1 quart. I use a quart every 1.5K miles. Like a lot of guys who track their Evo's, I switched to 15x45 weight Mobile 1 for hot summer track days, & it has reduced oil consumption.

When the dealership changed the oil they did not top it off. I know this as I had a tech inspection prior to the track day and saw that I was down by quarter of a quart and we topped it off. So I think we addressed that issue. To me it seems like the track day and then just regular hard driving may have caused it to burn thru oil.

I'm pretty sure the car was parked on a flat spot. I'll check again. But I didn't know about what u guys mentioned about 4.8quarts. I guess I'll check every time the dealership changes oil.

I used to check the oil very often before the first oil change, but when i saw it not burning thru oil i started to slack off a bit. Could have been that it came over filled from the factory and that's probably why i never realized it was eating thru oil.

thanks again

I agree with Mayhem. I saw an EVO drive 200+ easy freeway miles to the track and use at least 2/3 of a quart of oil. Then, it ran very hard on the track for 130 miles and didn't use a single drop. I have no idea why this would be true. It's bizarre.

(Of course, this was not me, because I would never take my evo onto a race track. I wouldn't want to void the 'valuable' OEM warranty, etc.)

In normal driving, I use about a .5 to 1 quart between oil changes. I check it every fillup because I'm paranoid now. The engine was broken in normally. This is the first car I've ever owned that burned oil. (and that includes some real sh*tboxes from my younger years, such as an '86 Sunbird Turbo GT with 150K miles on it)

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I wanted to update it. My EVO is now passed 18K miles on the odometer. I've noticed that these past 3-5K miles, there has been no almost oil consumption whatsoever. This includes both very aggressive and long, easy freeway miles. Has anyone else seen a sudden decrease in the oil consumption on their engine at high miles?

I know 18K isn't really high mileage.. I just mean that you'd expect an engine to be totally broken in within the first few thousand. Not 18,000.

Not unusual at all according to the service guy I spoke with. They told me between 15 and 20K.

I have no idea what you guys are talking about. I havent burnt any oil and I sometimes drive like a mad man. I installed an oil pressure gauge and I would expect the oil pressure to drop if we are burning that much oil, but its fine. Those of you that have problems or at least think you have problems, I would trust that the oil light would come on when the pressure gets dangerously low.

Agreed ... I seem to really go through the 5w-30 a lot quicker than the 10w-30

I usually add 4 and 1/4 quart when I change the oil and filter. Then I add 1/4 quart every 750 miles until the next oil change. By using this method I use the whole 5 quarts total every 2950 miles. And change the oil every 3000

Hey guys,

I use 10W 30 mobil 1 and added maybe 1/2 quart between oil changes or so. I have 25K miles now, and I don't think I've had to add oil lately. I broke in with Mobil1 and changed at 1K miles then every ~4K since.

If you are redlining the car a lot and under boost a lot, I think some oil WILL get burned off, but maybe not enough to measure. Whether the car is level or cold or whatever else can affect readings so it may be hard to tell. I always check in my garage after letting it sit overnight. The manual usually (didn't confirm for the EVO) says to let the car run, then cool off for 15 minutes or so, but I find that it reads low, so I add oil, then it may end up overfilled.

Also, the oil pressure light in the dash is usually a "it's too late" warning, right?
