Evo eating Oil? - Advise

I have approx 6,400 miles on the car. The dealership changed the oil about 3000 miles back. I used to check the oil level every week before the first oil change and I did not notice anything. Now I probably checked after 2000+ miles and there was almost no oil. I added about 2 quart of Mobil 1 5W-30 right now and am going to wait till the morning before I check again and give the engine a while to cool down properly.

From what i've searched and read this seems to be a common issue...some have it and some don't.

The engine was broken in properly so please refrain from asking this question.

Also, do I need to change the oil or check more often if the car is tracked? I took it to a road course over a month and half back and checked after that a couple times and the level seemed fine. Do I need to change the oil after every track event?

thanks!

make sure u check the oil level first thing in the morning. Checking it after turning it off will give a inaccurate reading. the oil is still in the block . I checked my oil and almost flipped out one night it was low. Then checked it in the morning it was full

From your post the answer if yes. If you track your car, you definetely have to check the car more often, not just the oil but everything else. Those guys that don't have this problem about the oil consumption are the ones that don't track their car. It is just their daily driver.

be careful that the dealership did not just add 4qts. The Evo normally takes 4.8qts during an oil change. I've notice when you drain the pan and fill it back up, the dip stick will read full before the engine is run for a minute or so.

Also, depending on where you live, I would run 10w-30 during the summer months.

Check it once every other fill-up, or after a day of hard driving. I have a little over 15K and the engine is slowly breaking itself of its oil eating ways. I always check mine cold, in the morning before I take off.

I dog my car hard and it has never burnt a drop of oil. If I was you top it off to the full level then drive it for a 1000 miles. Then check and see if any oil is needed to add it back to the full mark. If it requires more oil I would take it to the dealer and ask them to do a leak down test/ compression test. Also ask them to do a wet test on it.

I drive my car HARD and it has never needed a drop of oil between changes. I would keep on eye on the consumption, note it down and let the dealer know what is happening.

Push the motor hard. No consumption, but then again I dumped the factory fill and broke the motor in with dino juice for the first 5k.

I've been told by three different dealers that as long as consumption is under a quart every 1000 miles it is considered "acceptable".

Swich back to 10w-30. 5w-30 is just to thin and gets passed the oil rings when pushed hard.

I had a superchared Integra w/c ate 5w-30 oil. switching to 10w-30 stopped the consumption.

i use 5-30 during the coldest part of the NJ winter.. at most 2 or 3 month... then again u shouldnt be pushing hard in those month... but you reap the benefit from a smoother ignition start....

Very interesting. I switched from Mobil 1 5W-30 to Amsoil synthetic 10W-30 and have had nearly no consumption in 3k miles. With the Mobil 1, I was going through a quart every 1K miles.

Hey yeah - good point. So what are people who are not burning any oil at all running?

There is actually very little difference between Mobil1 5w30 and 10w30-- don't take my word for it, look at their specs on www.mobil1.com

So I doubt that's your problem. First, did you check the oil on level ground and at the same time as previous measurements (always after driving, always cold, whatever)?
