The manual says that auto mode will spray intermittently until reservoir is empty. Doesn't that imply that it won't sit there burning the motor on a dry tank? I don't have the manual handy, but i'll look at the manual again this evening if i can remember.

Im not quite sure. But it seems like almost a self-evident statement, saying that the water sprayer will spray water until there is no more water left to spray. It doesn't necesssarily mean the pump will shut off, but rather, that there just isn't any more water left.

Yeah hehe before going for a ride, put in a few ice cubes. Keep a cooler with a few bags of ice in the car. Every couple miles stop and put in a few more as they melt LoL!
