IC spray runoff?????

hey i noticed the last few times of putting some distilled water in the IC spray reservoir that is spills out onto the driveway from underneath the car. is this just a runoff that means its full??? Or did i i crack a line over winter and its leaking?? ive heard a few people say it actually has a runoff spot where you cant fill it anymore then it leaks out the side.

I've heard the same...maybe just overfilling it.

I had the same thing happen to me when I filled it for the first time. I hear that it’s normal… even though I don’t understand why Mitsu felt the need to do this.

It's not the fact that it has an overflow hose that is odd, it's that it is located at the base of the filler neck, not at the top where I would consider it "overfilled". There is a lot of empty filler neck space even when it's "full".

Agreed, when you look down the spout it seems there is a ton of room for volume, perhaps there is a heat distribution there that can melt the hose if its up higher?

by the way u shouldnt run distilled water for it, you will rust the intercooler.... mitsubishi recommends only windshield wiper spray

Isn't the intercooler Aluminum? The oxidation rate of aluminum is quite low by comparison to ferus metals.

Just fill it up to the drain tube located on the passenger side of the tank

Maybe filling the tank beyond that hose would incur a weight penalty that would offset any gains from the spray system?

You think that 2" in height is gonna make a difference heatwise? Maybe but I doubt it.

Technically aluminum doesn't rust, but it does oxidize. However, I seriously doubt windshield washer fluid will protect it from oxidation considering all the crap from the road and rain gets all over it, not to mention when you wash it. I know recommends windshield washer fluid, but do you really want your intercooler to be blue all the time?

Hmmmm...I knew my lap times would have been better if I hadn't had that tall drink of water before I got in the car

you never know, we have had heat distributions and anomolies in test vehicles in death valley several times. I doubt it. It was more in jest though hehe.

Distilled water will rust the intercooler?

What about rain water?

actually, water is fine. the only reason mitsu suggests using wiper fluid is so it wont freeze in cold areas. Luckily, we don't have to worry about that in Cali.
